Rockets win first game of season
The Neshoba Central Rockets defeated the Newton County Cougars 12-5 last Tuesday to begin their 2024 season.
Ryder White started on the mound for the Rockets giving up five runs through four hard-fought innings.
The game was tied up at five each through the bottom of the 5th inning. J.P. Hancock came on in relief in the top of the 5th inning and held the Cougars scoreless to finish the game.
Neshobaʼs bats came alive in the top of the 7th, producing seven big runs. Hancock singled scoring one run. Cooper Lewis induced Caleb Thames to hit into a fielderʼs choice, but one run scored. Ryder White singled, scoring one run, Logan Collins singled, scoring one run. Sanders Griffis drew a walk, scoring one run. Colt Smith induced RB Hardin to hit into a fielder”s choice, but one run scored.
The Rockets produced 12runs on 10 hits while the Cougars came up with five runs on 10 hits.
Big plays for the game came from Jordan Davis on a homerun in the top of the 2nd inning. Demarkez West doubled, helping the Rockets tie the game in the top of the 5th inning.
A solo homerun to right field by Haden Amis gave the Cougars the lead 5-4 in the bottom of the 3rd, but that didn’t last long. Amis and Cooper Johnson each collected two hits to lead the Cougars.
The Rockets weren’t as successful in their second game of the season.
Kosciusko defeated the Rockets 7-1 on home ground Thursday thanks to a five-run fourth inning. The Rockets scored first when Jordan Davis went for three bases then scored on a ground out by Sanders Griffis on the next play.
Kosciusko picked up the lead in the in the bottom of the first when Bennie Powell homered and Jon Roscoe singled to score another run to take the lead for good. The Whippets scored five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth with big plays from Braydon Rigby, Holden McGee and Barrett Kuhn.
Braxton Smith got the win for Kosciusko, giving up four hits and one run over there innings. Aidan Howard earned the save for the Whippets.
Will Williams took the loss for the Rockets, giving up four runs on four hits, striking out four and walking two in three innings. Sam Killens went three innings on the mound, giving up three runs on four hits. Sanders Griffis finished the game throwing for no hits and no runs.
Next up for the Rockets was a trip to West Lauderdale for a JV game at a five and the varsity at seven o’clock Tuesday.
