Yellowjackets' turnovers lead to 35-6 loss Friday

The turnover bug showed up at Union again last week.

The Yellowjackets threw two first-quarter interceptions and gave Forest an early lead as the Bearcats cruised to a 35-6 win on Friday night.

Union falls to 2-5 on the season and will play at J.Z. George on Friday night as they return to division play.

Union coach Jordan Wren said he sat several starters with injuries but thought his defense played well despite the final score.

“You can’t tell by looking at the score, but we actually played pretty well on defense,” Wren said. “We had a pick six and threw another interception that set them up on the 10. We had a bad snap on a punt that gave them a short field. That’s 21 points that we basically just gave them. With it being a non-district game, we sat several people this week with injuries so we didn’t go out there gun’s blazing. It was a week to get kids healthy. But Forest has a good team and is loaded with athletes.”

Union got the ball to start the game and gave the ball to Forest on their own 43 after a bad snap on a punt. Forest then went 43 yards in seven plays and scored on a 5-yard run to go up 7-0.

After swapping possessions, Forest intercepted a Myilan Moore pass and returned it to the Union 1. The Bearcats scored on the next play and took a 14-0 lead.

Moore threw another interception and gave Forest the ball at the Union 4. After a penalty, Forest scored on a 9-yard run and led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter.

The Bearcats added a score late in the second quarter and led 28-0 at the half.

“We went ahead and took Myilan out in the second quarter,” Wren said. “We rested most of our linemen the second half and played a lot of sophomores in the second half. Neither team really wanted to play the game and both of us just wanted to get out injury free and we did that.”

Forest got the ball to start the second half and went 50 yards in five plays and scored on a 34-yard run with 8:13 left in the third to go up 35-0 and get the clock running.

Union scored on the last play of the game, capping off a 55-yard, 12 plays drive as Mason Tucker scored on a 5-yard run.

Forest only had 216 yards of total offense with 119 passing and 97 rushing.

Union had just 94 yard rushing and 46 passing for 140 yards of total offense. Moore was 3-of-9 passing for 41 yards with two interceptions. Semaj Burnside led the rushing attack with 52yards on 10 carries.

On defense, Aidan Davis, Jordan Smith and Zie Buckley each had six tackles apiece while Quinn Harris had five tackles and Omarri Holliday had four tackles. Jon Perry also had a fumble recovery.
