September 1, 1944

Lieutenant William Hooper Houston, husband of Mrs. Sara Hand Houston, and son of Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Houston, this city, arrived Saturday to spend a 21-day leave with his family and parents.

Staff Sergeant Tommie Thompson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Cephus Thompson, of Philadelphia, now in Italy and serving as an armorer and gunner in a B-24 Liberator, was recently awarded the second bronze Oak Leaf Cluster for the Air Media "For meritorious achievement in aerial flight participating in sustained operational activities against the enemy." 

              

September 2, 1954

Polio continues to strike in Mississippi. State Board of Health reports listed 316 cases up to August 19. This compares with 236 for the same period last year and is an increase of 34%. Cases have occurred in 61 of the state's 82 counties.

East Central Junior College will begin its twenty-sixth year with the opening of the new school year on September 6th.  

September 3, 1964

H.S. Mason Jr., was re-elected president of the Neshoba County Farm Bureau at its annual meeting last Thursday night at the VFW home here.  

September 5, 1974

Prentice Copeland, Neshoba County Superintendent of Education, has announced receipt of a tentative approval of an education grant in the amount of $301,622 from the State Department of Education.

David Mars, of El Dorado, Ark., was honored by the Arkansas Jaycees at the state board meeting in Fayetteville recently. Mars is the sone of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Mars of Philadelphia.

September 5, 1984

Philadelphia Police Chief Jack Teer announced today that two radar units have been purchased by the Police Department and are now in operation. The units, which can be operated from stationary and mobile positions, cost $1,150 each.

 

September 7, 1994  

Not many people today can claim to have been around at the turn of the century, but Gertie Parkes and Dollie Majure welcomed the 20th century and are very close to witnessing yet another turn of century.

The Mississippi Legislature moved quickly during its special session in August to approve an additional $2.5 million to build three veteran nursing homes in our state.

      September 8, 2004

In the coming weeks the Philadelphia Neshoba County Community Development Partnership will take part in a five-county study on how the Internet can enhance local businesses to make them more competitive in the state, national and even world-wide market.

Philadelphia taxpayers will only have to make one stop to pay property taxes under a proposed inter-local agreement expected to be approved by the city this week.

The 50-year-old Neshoba Central High School building has major structural deficiencies, its lifetime is limited and parts could have to be vacated if conditions worsen, engineers have told the county School Board.
