September 8, 1944

Ration Points were lifted from 17 foods Tuesday when War Director of Mobilization James F. Byrnes announced that these 17 items will be permanently removed from the list. Housewives will be able to buy all varieties of jam, jelly, and fruit butter; as well as the following canned items: soup, asparagus, peas, corn, mixed vegetables, baked beans, lima beans, tomato paste, tomato pulp, tomato puree, pumpkin squash, and baby food.  

              

September 9, 1954

For the first time in the history of Philadelphia Golf Club, a husband and wife are club champions the same year. In the finals of the 1954 Club Championship, which were played Thursday afternoon, Sept. 2nd, Edwin DeWeese defeated Joe Rice Goodwin two and one to win the crown for the second time. His wife, Jeanna DeWeese, defeated Francis Molpus five and four to win the title for the ladies.  

September 10, 1964

Enrollment through Tuesday of this week showed that a total of 4,413 students registered at the schools of Neshoba County for the 1964-65 session.  

September 12, 1974

The Philadelphia High School Tornadoes opened the 1974 football season on a happy note, rolling to an impressive 20 to 12 victory over the visiting Decatur Warriors last Friday night.

The Neshoba County Health Department has established a health clinic at the Westside Community Center in an effort to bring the county health services closer to the people of the community who may otherside not be able to use its services because of lack of transportation or inconvenience.

September 12, 1984

Plans are being finalized for Neshoba County's Sequincentennial celebration. The week-long slate of events is scheduled to begin Oct. 6 with the annual Oktoberfest festivities at the Neshoba County courthouse.

The Neshoba County Sheriff's Department continued its investigation this week into the reported theft of $1,080 in cash from Mooney's IGA store at Williamsville.

 

September 7, 1994  

The proposed route of the new south highway bypass around Philadelphia was explained by the Mississippi Department of Transportation at a public meeting. Known as Alternate C, the route would differ from the previously proposed bypass route in the Williamsville area by having a segment of it routed south of Williamsville and the present intersection of Highway 15 and 16 west.

Kim Willis of Philadelphia is serving as interim biology instructor at East Central Community College in Decatur, announced Dr. Phil A. Sutphin, ECCC president. 

             

September 10, 2014

No action was taken once again on a proposed 20-percent salary increase for city department heads after the Mayor and Board of Alderman formally approved a $7.9 million general fund budget for Fiscal 2015 last week, reducing taxes slightly.

An emergency was declared by the Neshoba County School Board last week in an effort to expedite repairs to the 50-year-old high school after an engineer determined its lifetime is limited and that parts could have to be vacated if structural issues worsen.
