Union Yellow Jackets lose 2 games in region play to Forest

The Union Yellowjackets opened Region 5-3A play last week and lost a pair of tough games.

The Yellowjackets dropped a pair of games to Forest, falling 6-1 on Monday and 4-3 on Friday.

Union is scheduled to play in the Stringer Tournament on Monday and Tuesday. The Yellowjackets will return from spring break and host Sebastopol on Monday before hosting Clarkdale on Tuesday and traveling to the Bulldogs on Friday.

The Bearcats grabbed an early lead and opened district play with a five-run win over the Yellowjackets on Monday.

Forest scored three runs in the second, one in the fifth and two in the with. Union scored one in the sixth.

Forest outhit Union 6-4 while the Yellowjackets gave up eight walks and hit four batters. Cameron Sanderson was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jacob Howell singled and scored a run while Riley Martin singled and walked twice.

Jacob Freeman started on the mound and pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs, only one earned, on four hits and six walks while striking out four. Riley Martin pitched one inning and gave up two runs on two hits and two walks while Kolton Cockerham got the last out on one pitch.

The Bearcats jumped out to an early lead and held on to take a one-run win over the Yellowjackets on Friday.

Forest scored one in the first and three in the second. Union answered with two I the second and one in the third to cut the lead to 4-3.

Union outhit Forest 8-6 in the contest. Kolton Cockerham was 3-for-4 with a triple while Brylen Edmonson was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs. Jacob Freeman was also 2-for-4.

Colt Smith started on the mound and pitched all seven innings, giving up four runs, only one earned, on six hits and a walk while striking out eight.
