Both Union basketball teams managed to pick up a win this past week.

The Lady Yellowjackets hammered West Lauderdale 65-37 but fell 57-54 to Nanih Waiya on Thursday. 

The Yellowjackets took a tight 48-46 win over Nanih Waiya but lost 69-36 to West Lauderdale.

Union will return to action this week as they host Enterprise on Tuesday. They will then play in the Mize Tournament on Thursday, Friday and Saturday to finish off a busy week.

Nanih Waiya girls 57, Union 54

The Lady Yellowjackets were unable to hold onto a first-half lead as the Lady Warriors took a three-point win.

“We did not have too good of a night,” Union coach Cassy Madden said. “Nanih Waiya just simply out hustled and out played us.”

Kylee Madden led Union with 20 points, four steals and two assists while Rymia Craft had 12 points, 13 rebounds, four steals and four assists. Gracyn Tillman had 11 points and five rebounds while Elle Killen had six points and five rebounds. Sydney Coward had three points and four rebounds while Tiara Campbell had two points and five rebounds. 

Union boys 48, 

Nanih Waiya 46

The Yellowjackets overcame an early deficit and took a two-point win over the Warriors on Thursday.

Nanih Waiya led 13-6 at the end of the first period while Union took the second period 13-11 to cut the lead to 24-19 at the half. Union then outscored Nanih Waiya 14-7 in the third to take a 33-31 lead into the fourth. Each team scored 15 in the fourth for the final margin.

Mason Tucker and Kamarion Rushing led Union with 10 points apiece while U’Darrian Hickman had 13 points. Cam Hickmon had five points while Zi Buckley chipped in four points. 

Union girls 65, 

West Lauderdale 37

The Lady Yellowjackets used a big fourth period and took a 28-point win over the Lady Knights.

Union led 7-6 at the end of the first and then outscored West 17-12 in the second period to lead 24-18 at the half. Union extended its lead in the third, outscoring West 22-17 to lead 46-36 going to the fourth. Union then finished by outscoring West 19-1 to take the win.

Kylee Madden had another big night, leading Union with 24 points, eight steaks, six assists and three rebounds. Sydney Coward had 14 points, four assists and three rebounds while Rymia Craft had another double-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gracyn Tillman also had 11 points and two steals. 

West Lauderdale boys 69, Union 36

The Knights broke open a close game with a big second period and cruised to a 33-point win.

West held a narrow 14-12 lead after the first period but the Knights then outscored the Yellowjackets 22-5 in the second to lead 36-17 at the half. West continued to extend the lead in the second half, outscoring Union 20-11 in the third and 13-8 in the fourth.

U’Darrian Hickman led Union with 13 points while Kamarion Rushing had seven points.
