Man blames overgrown weeds for wreck

A concerned citizen told county supervisors that overgrown weeds and brush at intersections throughout the county pose a threat to motorists after his wife was involved in a wreck last week near Dixon.

The citizen, Brad Goss, said his wife, Amelia, was involved in a wreck at the intersection of Road 210 and Road 121 just past Dixon near Sebastopol on Thursday, Sept. 29, at 5:45 p.m. There were no injuries reported but Goss said his wife’s vehicle is likely totaled.

Goss, who stands just over six feet tall, said the weeds in some places had grown over his head. By Saturday morning the weeds had apparently been cut down, according to Goss, but he said this is not the only place in the county that poses a potential threat.

“Anywhere in the county you can find tall weeds,” Goss said. “They are all over county roads, specifically where we live in District 4.”

The couple lives less than a mile from the intersection where Amelia Goss had her wreck, he said.

Monday morning, Goss took his complaints to the Board of Supervisors meeting.

“They gave excuses and apologized and said it was not in the budget,” Goss said. “I don't want excuses.”

He said he is considering legal action.

County Administrator Jeff Mayo said he could not comment on the issue.

“Mr. Goss threatened legal action in his appearance at the board neeting today and we are unable to discuss the specifics of pending litigation,” Mayo said.

Mayo did not respond to further questions about overgrowth along roadways in general in the county.

The county Road Department, headed by Road Manager Eddie Posey, oversees 726.94 miles of road in Neshoba County.

Goss said his father, Gwen Goss, a Neshoba County school bus driver had previously reported the roadside vegetation at that specific intersection on Aug. 11 to the county and directly to District 4 Supervisor Kevin Wilcher on Sept. 19.

“They were told and had been warned,” Goss said.
