Leake Rebels drop first two games to Newton

The Leake Academy baseball team finally got on the field last week and suffered a pair of losses.

The Rebels lost 8-0 to Simpson Academy on Monday then 15-3 to Newton County Academy on Saturday.

Leake will return to action this week with a trio of games. The Rebels were scheduled to travel to Simpson on Monday and host Newton County Academy again on Tuesday. The Rebels will finish the week on Thursday as they host Manchester Academy.

The Rebels had just two hits as they opened the season with a shutout loss on Monday.

The game was scoreless after three innings before Simpson scored five runs in the fourth and finished with three in the seventh.

Simpson outhit Leake 8-2 in the contest. Riley Myers and Drew Roberson had Leake's two hits.

Roberson started and pitched the first two innings, striking out three and walked three while giving up one hit. Gary Atkinson pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up five runs on four hits and two walks. Myers pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit and struck out three. Rhett Atkinson pitched the final two innings and gave up three runs on two hits and two walks.

The Generals hit three home runs and took a five-inning run-rule win over the Rebels on Saturday.

The Generals scored five in the first, two in the fourth and eight in the fifth. Leake scored its three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

NCA outhit Leake 7-3 in the contest as the Rebels had seven errors and issued 13 walks. ECCC signee Hayden West had two home runs, including a grand slam with seven RBIs. Ole Miss signee Kemp Alderman also had a home run and three RBIs.

Riley Myers had an inside-the-park home run and two RBIs for the Rebels. Thomas Cheatham and Will Swinney both doubled and scored a run while Cheatham had an RBI.

Will Martin got the start and notched two innings, givin gup four runs on one hit and five walks. Thomas Cheatham pitched two innings and gave up seven runs on four hits and four walks while Kade Marble pitched the final inning and gave up three unearned runs on two hits and three walks.

Alderman pitched four innings without giving up a hit and struck out nine.
