Leake Academy squads continue to win on court

The Leake Academy basketball teams had a busy week as each squad won two out of three contests.

The Rebelettes opened the week with a 68-48 win over Oak Hill and then hammered Wayne 66-25 on Thursday. Leake then suffered a rare home-court loss on Friday, falling to Simpson 51-42 on Friday.

The Rebels also won two of three games, beating Oak Hill 66-29 and Wayne 58-40. The Rebels also lost to Simpson, falling 61-59 in overtime to the rival Cougars. 

The Lady Rebels move to 21-4 on the season while the Rebels move to 18-7 on the season.

Leake is scheduled to host Park Place Academy on Tuesday and travel to Lamar School on Friday. 

Leake girls 68, Oak Hill 48

The Rebelettes started fast and cruised to a 20-point win over the Lady Raiders on Tuesday.

Leake jumped out to a 21-8 lead in the first period and then outscored the Lady Raiders 21-10 in the second to lead 42-18 at the half. Leake took the third period 16-14 while Oak Hill outscored the Rebelettes 16-10 for the final period. 

Anna Morgan Young led Leake with 14 points while Katye Jones had 13 points and nine rebounds. Marleigh Myers had 11 points and five rebounds while Addie Crowe had nine points and five rebounds. Olivia Rudolph had nine points and three rebounds while Hannah Clark also had four points. 

Leake boys 66, Oak Hill 29

The Rebels dominated the first half and cruised to a 37-point win over the Raiders.

Leake outscored Oak Hill 21-9 in the first and 24-8 in the second period to lead 45-17 at the half. Leake then outscored Oak Hill 15-5 in the third and led 60-22 going to the fourth. Oak Hill took the fourth period 7-6 for the final margin.

Samuel Prince and Matthew Nowell led Leake with 10 points apiece while Tate Edwards and Trey Clark each had nine points apiece. Lucas Thomas had six points while Jake Freeny and Benjamin Jackson had five points. 

Leake girls 66, Wayne 25

The Rebelettes dominated the beginnings of both halves and cruised to a 41-point win over the Lady Jaguars on Thursday.

Leake jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first half  and then outscored Wayne 16-10 in the second to lead 36-19 at the half. Leake then put the ball way in the third as they outscored Wayne 25-5 in the third to lead 61-24 going to the fourth. Lake took the fourth 5-1 with a running clock for the final margin.

Senior Katye Jones led Leake with 25 points and six rebounds. Jenna Allen had eight points, four rebounds and four steals while Hannah Clark had six points and three rebounds. Anna Morgan Young had five points and four rebounds while Liza Kate Long had five points. 

Leake boys 58, Wayne 40

The Rebels pulled away in the second half to take an 18-point win on Thursday night in district play.

Leake led 15-11 at the end of the first while Wayne took the second period 13-11 as the Rebels led 26-24 at the half. Leake then pulled away in the second half and outscored Wayne 15-9 in the third and 17-7 in the fourth.

Samuel Prince led Leake with a career-high 37 points while Tate Edwards had seven points. 

Simpson girls 51, Leake 42

The Rebelettes fell behind early and couldn’t recover as the Lady Cougars took a nine-point on Friday night in district play.

Simpson started the game on an 11-0 run and led 22—14 at the end of the first period. The Lady Cougars then outscored the Rebelettes 13-6 in the second period to lead 35-20 at the half. Leake battled back in the second half and outscored Simpson 14-9 in the third and 8-7 in the fourth but couldn’t complete the comeback.

Caroline Cheatham led Leake with 12 points while Jenna Allen came off the bench to score 11 points. Katye Jones had nine points and eight rebounds while Sara Prince had seven points.

Simpson boys 61, Leake 59

The Rebels hit a late 3-pointer to force overtime but the Cougars held on to take a two-point win in overtime.

Leake started fast as they outscored Simpson 17-9 in the first and 16-13 in the second and led 33-22 at the half. But Simpson outscored Leake 19-5 in the third period to take a 41-38 lead into the fourth period. Simpson led most of the fourth period and a last-second 3-pointer by Jack Harkins sent the game to overtime. But in the extra period, Simpson outscored Leake 9-7 to take the win.

Samuel Prince had another big night with 32 points while Matthew Nowell had eight points.
