Generals take 4-2 win over Yellowjackets

Two of the area's best pitchers met in Stringer on Monday when Newton County Academy's Kemp Alderman and Union's Jaylon Buckley met in a public versus private school matchup.

It was Alderman who got the better end of the deal as the Generals took a 4-2 win over the Yellowjackets in the Stringer Tournament.

Union falls to 6-3 with the loss and was scheduled to begin division play this week before those games were cancelled. All MHSAA sporting events were cancelled for this week. The MHSAA is scheduled to have further discussions this week about resuming games.

In a matchup of two of the area's best pitchers, the Generals took a two-run win over the Yellowjackets in the first-ever matchup between the schools on Monday at Stringer.

The Generals scored two runs in the second and third innings to led 4-0. Union scored its two runs in the seventh inning.

NCA outhit Union 6-5 in the contest. Kemp Alderman was 2-for-2 while Hayden West was 2-for-3. Lee Hollingsworth singled and drove in a run. Braxton Thoms walked twice and scored a run.

Union had five hits, led by J.T. Vance who was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Kolton Cockerham had a solo hot run while Rope Lovern also doubled.

Alderman picked up the win on the mound for the Generals, going 4 2/3 innings and scattering three hits and four walks while striking out nine. Hays West pitched the final 2 1/2 innings and gave up two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out five.

Jaylon Buckley pitched six innings and gave up four runs, only two earned, on six hits and four walks while striking out seven.
