Yellowjackets’ seasons come to an end after losses in 2A bracket

The Union basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end last week.

The Lady Yellowjackets won their first-round game, hammering Bruce 63-22 but then lost to traditional 2A power New Site 64-34 on Friday night. 

The Union boys lost 78-57 to Calhoun City in their opening-round game of the Class 2A playoffs. 

Union girls 63, Bruce 22

The Lady Yellowjackets outscored the Lady Trojans in every period and cruised to a 41-point win in the opening round of the Class 2A Tournament. 

Union jumped out to a 21-4 lead in the first period and then outscored Bruce 16-7 in the second to lead 37-11 at the half. Union continued to extend the lead in the second half, outscoring Bruce 20-10 in the third and 6-1 in the fourth to take the win. 

Kylee Madden led a balanced scoring attack with 12 points while Rymia Craft had 11 points. Gracyn Tillman and Sydnee Coward each had 10 points apiece while Destiny Campbell had nine points and Elle Killen added eight points. 

New Site girls 64, Union 34

The Lady Cardinals dominated the first three periods and took a 30-point win to end the Lady Yellowjackets season.

New Site led 18-11 in the first period and then outscored Union 22-8 in the second period to lead 40-19 at the half. New Site then outscored Union 20-8 in the third and led 60-27 going to the fourth. Union took the fourth period 7-4 for the final margin.

Kylee Madden led Union with 23 points while Elle Killen had four points. 

Calhoun City boys 78, Union 57

The Wildcats opened up an early lead and held on to take a 21-point win over the Yellowjackets in first-round action on Tuesday.

Calhoun City outscored Union 21-13 in the first and 17-9 in the second to lead 38-22 at the half. Calhoun then outscored Union 27-21 in the third to  lead 65-43 going to the fourth. Union took the fourth period 14-13 for the final margin.

Keon Hutchins led Union with 18 points while U’Darrian Hickman and Kamarion Rushing each had 10 points apiece.
