Union football coach Jordan Wren has said that his team can’t keep on relying on its long-passing game.

But on Friday night, that’s just what the Yellowjackets did.

Union fought off a tough challenge from Newton County in a back-and-forth contest, using five touchdowns from Keon Hutchins to take a 49-45 win over the Cougars on Friday night.

Union improves to 4-0 on the season and will travel to Lake on Friday night to renew their rivalry with the Hornets.

Wren said the game was like a Pac 12 contest as his team scored late to take the four-point win, breaking a three-game streak by Newton County in the series.

“It was like a Pac 12 game, people were scoring all over the place,” Wren said. “The positive side is people are going to have to decide what they are going to try to stop with us. We were effective both throwing and running the football against a very solid 4A opponent. People are going to talk about our defense and how many points that gave up but they had two big stops and got the off the field late in the game so it’s not like everything we did on defense was bad. We got stops when we needed to get stops and scored when we needed to score. At the end of the night, when it all hit the floor, we got the win.”County led 45-42.
