Union teams open playoffs against St. Patrick

The Union Lady Yellowjackets will be hosting a home playoff game after finishing second in the Division 6-2A tournament last week.

The Lady Yellowjackets beat Scott Central 40-33 to advance to the title game, where they lost 52-43 to defending 2A champion Newton on Friday.

The Yellowjackets lost both games last week, falling 56-39 to Newton on Thursday and 54-51 to Lake on Friday.

The Union girls, now 22-7 on the year, will host St. Patrick on Monday while the Yellowjackets (20-8) will travel to St. Patrick on Tuesday. Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Lady Tigers pulled away in the second half as they took a nine-point win over the Lady Yellowjackets on Friday in the 6-2A championship game.

Union led 12-10 at the end of the first but trailed 18-16 at the half. Newton started to pull away in the second half, outscoring Union 20-18 in the third and 14-9 in the fourth.

Kamyia Russell led Union with 13 points while Keirra Russell and Trinity Lambert each had eight points apiece.

The Lady Yellowjackets pulled away after a slow first period to advance to the 6-2A finals on Thursday.

Scott Central led 8-7 at the end of the first but trailed 17-15 at the half. Union pulled away in the second half, outscoring Scott Central 12-10 in the third and 11-8 in the fourth.


Keirra Russell led Union with 11 points while Trinity Lambert added 10 points. Kamyia Russell added nine points for the Lady Yellowjackets.

The Tigers used a big third period as they took a 17-point win over the Yellowjackets on Thursday night.

Union led 11-10 at the end of the first but Newton took a 23-22 lead at the half. The Tigers then outscored the Yellowjackets 24-6 in the third to take a 47-28 lead into the fourth. Union took the fourth period 11-9 for the final.

Jamarcus Jones led Union with 13 points. Kenyon Clay had eight points while E.J. Campbell and J.T. Vance each had seven points.

The Yellowjackets fell behind early as the Hornets held on to take a three-point win in the tournament 6-2A consolation game on Friday.

Lake jumped out to a 20-10 lead in the first period and outscored Union 13-11 in the second quarter to lead 33-21at the half. Union took the fourth period 19-10 in the fourth to cut the lead to 43-40 going to the fourth, where each team scored 11 points.

J.T. Vance led Union with 31 points while Jamarcus Jones had 11 points.
