The Union Yellowjackets kicked off the 2024 baseball season by winning two of three games this past week.

Union hammered Leake Central 15-3 on Tuesday and 16-0 on Friday. Union then dropped a 7-5 contest to Quitman on Saturday to finish out the week.

Union will play a two-game series with Scott Central this week, playing on the road on Tuesday and at home on Friday On Saturday, Union will travel to Raleigh for a 1 p.m. contest. 

Union 15, Leake Central 3

The Yellowjackets took advantage of 11 walks and took a four-inning, run-rule win over the Gators on Tuesday to open the season.

Union scored one in the first and third, four in the second and finished with nine in the fourth. 

Union had nine hits in the contest. Rafe Mannng was 3-for-3 with a double, four runs scored and four RBIs while Hayden Dolan was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Turner Johnson was 2-for-4 while Austin Lee, Kooper Fultz, Jackson Flake and Tanner Watkins each scored two runs apiece. 

Jacob Freeman pitched all four innings for Union, giving up three unearned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out nine. 

Union 16, Leake Central 0

The Yellowjackets scored early and often and took four-inning, run-rule win over the Gators on Friday. 

Union scored three in the first and second innings and finished with five in the third and fourth.

Union outhit Leake 10-2. Austin Lee was 3-for-3 with four runs scored while Samuel Alawine was 2-for-3 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Turner Johnson was 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while Kooper Fultz doubled and drove in three runs. Rafe Manning singled and drove in three runs while Myilan Moore scored three runs. 

Fultz pitched all four innings and gave up two runs and one hit while striking out seven. 

Quitman 7, Union 5

The Panthers used a pair of three-run innings and took a two-run win over the Yellowjackets on Saturday. 

Quitman scored three in the first while Union scored one in the second. Quitman led 4-1 after five innings before Union scored four runs in the sixth to go up 5-4. Quitman then added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take the win.

Quitman outhit Union 7-4 in the contest. Samuel Alawine was 2-for3 while Kooper Fultz and Austin Lee each singled and scored. 

Alawine started and pitched four innings, giving up four runs on four hits and five walks. Tanner Watkins pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on three walks. Rafe Manning pitched the last 2/3 of an inning and gave up one run on three hits.
