The weather played havoc with Leake Academy’s basketball schedule the past week.

Monday and Tuesday’s games were cancelled, leaving Leake with just one game on Friday.

Both teams took care of business on Friday night as the Rebelettes hammered Wayne 72-34 and the Rebels took a 56-40 win over the Jaguars.

The Rebelettes pulled away in the last three periods, outscoring Wayne 47-19 to take a 38-point win on Friday night in their only action of the week.

The game was competitive in the first period as Leake outscored Wayne 25-15 in the first behind 11 points from Katye Jones. Leake then outscored Wayne 23-5 in the second period behind 11 points from Jenna Allen to take a 48-20 lead at the half. Leake got the clock running in the third, outscoring Wayne 19-2 to lead 67-22 going to the fourth period. Wayne took the fourth period 12-5 for the final margin.

Jones led Leake with 13 points while Allen had 11 points. Marleigh Myers had a good night with 10 points, four rebounds and four steals while Addie Crowe also had nine points and three rebounds. Anna Morgan Young had eight points while Sara Prince added seven points. Olivia Rudolph also had four rebounds and three assists for Leake.

The Leake girls improve to 23-4 on the season and have three games scheduled this week. Leake will travel to rival Simpson on Tuesday and then host Grace Christian on Thursday for senior night. Leake will then wrap up the regular season on Friday night as they host East Rankin in a makeup game from last week.

Leake is 6-2 in district play but after Lamar beat Simpson last week, it opens up the window for the Rebelettes to still capture the No. 1 seed going to the district tournament, which will be at Simpson this year.

“Our team likes our chances heading into next week,” Leake coach Amanda Hatch said. “We talked about how some things are out of our control, like like the results of other district games; but we can control certain aspects of the game as far as defensive and rebounding intensity as well as offensive execution to give ourselves the best opportunity. If we can win our last two district games next week (including beating east rankin by at least seven), we can secure the one seed heading into the district tournament.”

The Rebels dominated the middle two periods and took a 16-point win over the Jaguars on Friday night.

Each team scored 13 points in the first period while Leake outscored Wayne 20-11 to lead 33-24 at the half. Leake continued to extend the lead in the second half, outscoring Wayne 12-6 in the third and 11-10 in the fourth.

Samuel Prince led Leake with 17 points while Jack Harkins had his best game of the season with 16 points. Jake Freeny had six points while seven other Rebels scored.

The Leake boys improve to 21-7 on the season and also head to Simpson with a chance at first place. Simpson won the first contest 61-59 in overtime.

“I love where our team is heading into the last week of district games,” Leake coach Jason Morgan said. “We have a shot at first place Tuesday at Simpson, then it will be time to wrap up the regular season and get ready for postseason play.”
