Lady Yellowjackets kick off softball season with 2 losses

The Union softball team was shutout in a pair of games, losing 15-0 to 5A power Neshoba Central on Tuesday and 4-0 to Florence on Saturday. Union got its first win on Thursday with a 15-10 win over Southeast Lauderdale. 

Union will play a two-game series with Kemper County this week, going to DeKalb on Tuesday while hosting the Lady Wildcats on Friday. Union will then play in the Raleigh Tournament as they are scheduled to play Harrison Central at noon and Taylorsville at 4 p.m.

Neshoba Central 15, 

Union 0

The Lady Rockets finished strong with 12 runs in the last three innings to take a shutout win on Tuesday.

Neshoba scored one in the second and two in the third and led 3-0 after three. Neshoba then scored one in the fifth, four in the sixth and seven in the seventh.

Neshoba outhit Union 20-3. Landrey Hanna was 2-for-3 while Abigail Cleveland had Union’s other hit. 

Alanee Wheeler started in the circle and pitched five innings for Union, taking the loss. Wheeler gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk while striking out eight. Aspen Lovern pitched the last two innings and gave up 11 runs on 12 hits. 

Union 15, Southeast 10

The Lady Yellowjackets overcame an early deficit and scored 14 runs in the last four innings to take the five-run win.

Union banged out 14 hits and had four extra base hits. Lauryn Roebuck was 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs. Alanee Wheeler was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored while Tiara Campbell was 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Destiny Mould was 2-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Marquisha Davis was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Lacee Bishop tripled and drove in three runs. Abigail Cleveland also scored two runs. 

Cleveland starting in the circle and pitched all seven innings for Union, giving up 10 runs with only two being hear. She picked up the win as she gave up nine hatstand six walks while striking out three.
