April 23, 1943

Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Elwood are announcing the arrival of a son on Friday, April 16th.  The baby has been given the name William Edward Elwood. 

Pete Majure, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Majure of Madden, won top honors at the recent Southeast Mississippi Livestock Show at Forest.  He also placed first in showmanship and was a member of the Leake County team which placed first in the county group.  His winning two-year old Jersey is Primate Magnolia Satire. 

                

April 23, 1953

Miss Bettie Jane Scott of Carthage has begun work this week as the assistant Home Demonstration Agent in Neshoba County.  Miss Scott is a graduate of Mississippi Southern College and has been teaching Home Economics in Leake County.  She was associated with 4-H Club work there as a Teacher-Sponsor of the 4-H Club.  

The public is invited to attend the Senior Recital of four young ladies, Misses Dawn Mosley, Barbara Rea, Jane Madison, and Virginia Jones, Friday Evening, April 24 at the High School Auditorium who are being presented by their teacher, Mrs. Hugh Jones.

       

     April 25, 1963   

Mrs. Hal Russell is presenting her senior voice pupils, Misses Laura Gipson and Judy Marshall in recital on April 26 at the High School Auditorium.  Sam Hand with his coronet will be guest soloist. 

April 26, 1973

Miss Beatrice Hamill, Xi Chapter, Philadelphia, is the recipient of the third annual Zeta State Achievement award given by Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for women educators, for the outstanding Delta Kappa Gamma member.

The Choctaw Central Elementary School conducted a Spelling Bee for grades 4-5-6 on April 20.  Barbara Bell, first place; Leland Gibson, second place; and Timothy Willis, third place.                             

April 27, 1983

Brooks Bryan, was the winner in the St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital Bikathon.  He collected $306 and was presented a bicycle donated by the Wal Mart Store in Philadelphia.  Making the presentation was store manager Mike Acridge, and Brook’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Sparkey Bryan.   

April 28, 1993 

Sara Buntyn of Laird’s Hospice Care received the 1992 award for the most hours of service.  One of her patients she visited is Major Matthews.     

      

April 23, 2003

Dean Michael Maloney awards Jonathan Mills of Philadelphia the Family Law Section of the Mississippi Bar Award during the Mississippi College School of Law-Law Day held April 4 at the Crowne Plaza in Jackson.  The annual award is presented to a second-year law student who has excelled academically and shows promise in the legal profession.       

             

April 24, 2013

The Philadelphia High School Beauty and Beau Pageant was held on Feb. 16.  The following were named as beauties and beaus: Emily Duncan, Mary Katherine Larabee, Macy Martin (Most Beautiful), Haley Matthews, and Meghan Sledge; Paul Prince, Michael Whitlock, Kardeius Peebles, Avery Duncan (Most Handsome), Malek Moore, and Abe Mars.
