"Eighty years is not long enough to live if we keep busy doing the things that the Lord meant for us to do," said Mr. George W. Mars, who is celebrating his eightieth birthday here on next Thursday, Oct. 19. Mr. Mars, known to nearly everyone as "Uncle" George is a business landmark in Neshoba County.

The Philadelphia City schools wish to acknowledge publicly their appreciation for the books given to the school by the DeWeese family. The books are composed largely of the collection made by the late Mr. and Mrs. A.B. DeWeese. 

              

October 14, 1954

Mayor Norman A. Johnson Jr. of Philadelphia has the distinction of being the first Mississippi man ever to be appointed chairman of a national American Legion committee. Johnson, a former commander of the State Department of the Legion, has been named head of one of the basic 12 national commissions by National Commander Seaborn P. Collins.

The North District Youth Rally will be held at the Philadelphia Church of God on Saturday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. It was announced this week by Claude L. Adcock, pastor.  

October 15, 1964

Four Neshoba County 4-H members were winners in district and state contests and will be awarded for their accomplishments. Mitchell Jones places first in the district on his corn record. 

  

October 17, 1974

The Philadelphia High School Tornadoes are looking to avenge this past week's 40 to 8 homecoming loss to Kosciusko when they travel north to Eupora tomorrow night.

Workers for the Neshoba County United Way Campaign were "excited this week over the results reported this past Friday," said John Selig, president of the United Way. Led by the employees at U.S. Motors, $24,612.50 or 53 percent of the 1975 goal has been pledged. 

October 17, 1984

Prentiss Copeland, county superintendent of education, announces a kindergarten interest survey for Neshoba Central Elementary School. 

 

October 12, 1994  

John Paul, harpsichordist, will be in concert in the Neshoba County Public Library Thursday night. John Paul is British-born, educated at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and now lives in Jackson.

A nearly $20 million proposal that would almost double the size of the county hospital could be finalized by December. 

             

October 15, 2014

Area marching bands fared well at the recent Mississippi High School Activities Association Region III Marching Festival and are looking to do better in future competitions.
