April 7, 1944

The Junior Class of the Philadelphia High School will present its annual play at the high school auditorium at eight o'clock this Friday. "Lady Spitfire" is the title of the play to be presented.

Philadelphia voters will be called upon to decide contests in only two places in the city government for which nominees will be named in the municipal Democratic primary May 9.

April 8, 1954

The Board of Supervisors are advertising the sale of $150,000 in full faith and credit bonds for the purpose of repairing, remodeling of the courthouse and construction of a jail.

After five months of studying and voting on an equalization dual school system in Mississippi, the state Senate voted Tuesday to accept the House compromise bill and passed it by a good majority. 

April 9, 1964

James Cook's Grocery, located about four miles east of the city on Highway 16, was burglarized last Sunday night.

The former lecturer for the Young Communist League of America, Buford Posey, a Neshoba County, Miss. native, was in Jackson this week, and is reported as being here to take part in coordinating the plans for a massive civil rights campaign.

Tony Crawford, a senior at Leake Academy, has been selected for the Mississippi Private School All-Star basketball team.

Diane Williams, a 17-year-old senior at Philadelphia High School has been named the top Star student in her geographic area.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Holland celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary recently with friends and relatives at a reception in the family life center of First United Methodist Church.

Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Burt of Greenwood announce the birth of their first child, a son, Cory Wade.

April 6, 1994  

Miss Jennifer L. Ellison has been named a Star Student for the 1993-94 school year at Neshoba Central High School.

Beer and whiskey from the vault in the Sheriff's office was dispatched down the storm sewer in front of the courthouse early Tuesday. The beer and whiskey had accumulated over a period of time and had been held as evidence.

A house and mobile home were destroyed in the Sandtown community and many other structures were damaged late Sunday by an apparent EF-1 tornado with estimated wind speeds of up to 95 mph, the National Weather Service said following its preliminary assessment on Tuesday.

More than 20 firefighters battled one of the largest house fires the Philadelphia Fire Department has ever fought early Monday after a lightning strike in the Airpark subdivision, as bolts of lightning continued to flash, thunder boomed, and heavy rains fell.
