February 4, 1944

Forty years ago, in February 1904, a new store was established in the then sprawling village of Philadelphia. Established upon the vital principles of honesty and fair dealings to all, this business has grown with Philadelphia, and today, like the fine, modern City of Philadelphia, it stands as a monument to the solid rock foundation upon which it was laid and built. This store, the Turner Hardware & Furniture Company, was founded by the late Mr. James A. Turner.

The memory of the late Judge Earl S. Richardson and of the service he rendered the people of East Mississippi and the state will be appropriately honored by the construction of a highway in East Mississippi, if a bill introduced last week by Rep. Marvin B. Henley is enacted.

February 4, 1954

"Forward on Liberty's Team," is the theme for observance of Boy Scout Week, which will begin Sunday Feb. 7 and continue through the 13th. Local Scouts will select officers to "Run the Town."

The Beacon Street Baptist Church is formulating final plans for entering their new auditorium sometime in March. There are 44 pews needed to seat the auditorium. The pews will be purchased from and installed by Wells Wood.

     February 6, 1964    

Mrs. Johnny Young has been named a trustee of the Neshoba County General Hospital for Beat One by Supervisor Carl J. DeWeese. Mrs. Young was named this week by DeWeese to fill the unexpired term of her late husband, Johnny Young.

Two more break-ins have been reported here, one place for the second time in a week. The Neshoba County High school was entered last weekend, only a week after the county elementary school was burglarized in the same manner. 

February 7, 1974

A Philadelphia construction firm has been awarded a $224,065 contract for work at Meridian Naval Air Station. The offices of Sen. John C. Stennis and Congressman G. V. Montgomery announced that the contract was awarded to the Perry Construction Co. for construction of a 48-unit mobile home park facility aboard the Naval Air Station.

February 8, 1984

The Neshoba County Board of Supervisors are considering the possibility of levying property taxes on the owners of cabins on the Neshoba County Fairgrounds.

Video arcade operators and customers in Philadelphia will be forced to find a cure for "Pac-Man Fever" as a result of a city ordinance passed by the Philadelphia Board of Alderman Tuesday night.

February 2, 1994 

Philadelphia High School has been chosen to host the Class 2A boys South State basketball tournament, Feb 26-27, the Mississippi High School Activities Association announced Monday.

The 20th annual Mississippi Science and Mathematics Tournament unfolds at Mississippi College on Feb. 4 and 5, with top high school science and mathematics students from the local area participating. 

February 4, 2004

Absenteeism was on the rise at area schools this week with children showing flu-like symptoms, although a state health official said Tuesday a majority of cases were not influenza.

February 5, 2014

More questions were raised than answered last week when the Mayor and Board of Aldermen met with Mississippi Action for Progress (MAP) officials over their lease of the old Booker T. Washington School and anticipated improvements to the gym.

Construction is moving at a brisk pace on the new Family Dollar store, which plans to hire about 10 people initially when it opens in early spring.
