A Neshoba County man was arrested with meth at a safety checkpoint south of Dixon last week.

The man, Bennie Joe Stevens, 42, 14770 Highway 21 South, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, according to Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark.

Clark said deputies first encountered Stevens when he drove his SUV through the safety checkpoint on Highway 21 at Road 210 at about 12:30 a.m.

According to Clark, Stevens had neither proof of insurance nor his license. Deputies observed he was stuttering and nervous and arguing with his wife who was in the passenger seat.

Deputies then asked Stevens to exit the vehicle. Upon exiting the vehicle, Clark said deputies noticed a small plastic bag in his waistband.

The bag contained a clear crystal-like substance believed to be methamphetamine.

Stevens told investigators he had been clean for about a month and was trying to hide the drugs form his wife.
