Union’s 2020 season ends against Taylorsville in playoffs

The playoff run is over for Coach Wren and his Union Yellowjackets, but it was a season to remember.

The Yellowjackets  fell to the defending Class 2A state champion Taylorsville Tartars in the third round of the Class 2A playoffs 65-37 on Friday night.

The Jacket defense had no answers for the hot octane Tartar offense, which was led by star quarterback Ty Keyes and running back Jeff Pittman. Keyes completed 9-of-12 passes for 177 yards and four touchdowns, while Pittman was busy, carrying the pigskin 27 times for 223 yards and five touchdowns on a huge night.

Tyrese Keyes caught 5 balls for 100 yards and two touchdowns to lead Taylorsville in receiving.

UHS quarterback Kenyon Clay capped off his terrific junior season, completing 9-of-16 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns while also carrying the ball 20 times for 109 yards and twp touchdowns. Clay was responsible for 44 touchdowns this season for Union. Senior wide receiver Markus Jones caught two passes for 88 yards to lead the Jacket receivers in his last game wearing the black and gold.

Taylorsville outgained Union 493-302 in total offense. The Tartars out rushed the Jackets 316-183 yards. Union’s season ends at 9-3, with a bright future ahead.

Taylorsville meanwhile, improves to 12-1 in 2020. The Tartans will advance to the South State final for a matchup with the Enterprise Bulldogs.

This is the last time Union fans will see their Yellowjackets playing Taylorsville in the playoffs. The Tartars are have been reclassified as a Class 1A school while Union is going up to Class 3A next year.
