Being recognized as a Woman of Distinction by the Girls Scouts of Greater Mississippi last month was an incredibly humbling experience, says Philadelphia’s Pat Thomasson.

“I was very honored and glad to be a part of this event as several people I think highly of have held this honor before,” said Thomasson. “The most wonderful thing that happened was when people knew I was being included, they wanted to tell me about their time in the Girl Scouts and what it meant to them.”

The Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi held the event at the Sheraton Flowood Hotel on September 8. Thomasson was recognized for her accomplishments, most notably being the CEO of Thomasson Company and the first female chairman of the Mississippi Manufacturing Association. She was recognized along with four other women: Therese Aple, journalist and founder/CEO of Darkhorse Press, Carla Kirkland, CEO of The Kirkland Group, Dr. Carmen Walters, president of Tougaloo College, and Pearl Wicks, Executive Vice President and COO of Hope Credit Union.

“I was a Brownie, but I was never in the Girl Scouts,” Thomasson said. “I know they do cool things, and it was a blessing to be part of all this. Girl Scouts build leaders and team members, and those skills are needed as much today as they ever were before.”

Thomasson said the most important people at the event were the people there supporting women.

“So many people are coming together to help women and encourage them in their roles, to be strong, and helping to make a better society,” she said. “They were the important people there. These are tremendous women and I love being around them and hope to become friends with them in the future.”

This event was the 18th annual Women of Distinction. Every year, the Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi assembles a group of distinguished women to be honored at the event.

According to the Girl Scouts, these leaders, through their commitment to the communities in which they live and work, serve as role models, support the many activities enjoyed by 5,000 Girl Scouts across 45 counties in central and south Mississippi.

Girls Scouts of Greater Mississippi CEO Becky Traweek said the Girl Scouts are honored to have Thomasson and the others represent the Girl Scouts.

“Each is a leader in her profession and has worked hard to make the world a better place,” Traweek said.
