Rebelettes make comeback over Leake Central

The Leake Academy girls had another productive week on the hardwoods but it wasn’t an easy one.

The Rebelettes added three more wins to their total but it took a huge comeback effort against Leake Central on Monday to take a 50-43 win and a scrappy effort against East Rankin to take a 45-38 win. They finished the week with an easier 51-32 win over Winston Academy. 

The Rebels had an easier week as they took a pair of double-digit wins, hammering East Rankin 66-23 on Tuesday and East Rankin 57-40 on Friday.

The Leake Academy girls improve to 29-2 on the season and will finish out the regular season as the host Simpson County Academy on Tuesday. The Leake girls must win by more than five points to claim the No. 1 seed in the upcoming district tournament, which will be hosted by East Rankin.

The Leake boys improve to 17-10 overall and 7-2 in district play and are locked in as the No. 2 seed heading to the district tournament. After hosting Simpson on Thursday, the Leake boys will host Delta Streets on Thursday to end the regular season.

Leake Academy girls 50, Leake Central 43

The Rebelettes put together a big fourth period and overcame 27 turnovers to come from behind and take a seven-point win over the Lady Gators on Monday at East Central Community College.

Each team scored nine points in the first period and LA outscored Central 10-8 in the second and led 19-17 at the half. But the Lady Gators then went on a 12-0 run and led 29-19. Leake Central went on to outscored LA 17-3 in the period and lead 34-22 going to the fourth period. 

Leake Central extended the lead to as many as 17 points at 39-22 before the Rebelettes got in gear. LA got back-to back 3-pointers from Morgan Freeny and Emeri Warren to cut the lead to 39-38. After a free throw by Freeny, Leake got two straight 3-pointers from Freeny to cut the lead to 39-34. Freeny tied the game at 41-41 with a layup and the Rebelettes closed the game out with seven straight points from the free-throw line an a layup by Freeny to take the win.

Freeny led Leake Academy with 22 points and six rebounds and was 7-of-9 from the free-throw line. Warren had 12 points and six rebounds while Katye Jones had six points and four rebounds. Allen Kaye Wilcox also had four points and five rebounds.

Leake Academy girls 45, East Rankin 38

The Rebelettes overcame another deficit as they held off the Lady Patriots to take a seven-point win on the road on Tuesday. 

Leake led 11-10 at the end of the first while East Rankin outscored the Rebelettes 11-8 in the second period to lead 21-19 at the half. Leake then scored five straight and took the lead on a 3-pointer by Grace Maxey at 24-21. The Rebelettes then outscored East Rankin 17-13 to lead 36-34 going to the fourth. Leake never gave up the lead and pulled away in the fourth to take the win. 

Maxey led Leake with 13 points and four rebounds while Emeri Warren had 12 points and five rebounds. Allen Kaye Wilcox had eight points and four rebounds while Katye Jones and Marleigh Myers each had four points apiece. 

Leake boys 66, 

East Rankin 23

The Rebels dominated from the outset and cruised to a 43-point win over the Patriots on Tuesday.

Leake dominated the first half and outscored East Rankin 18-6 in the first and 24-9 in the second to lead 42-15 at the half. Leake continued to extend its lead in the second half and outscored East Rankin 13-3 in the third and 11-5 in the fourth.

Samuel Prince led Leake with 14 points and three steals while Jack Harkins had eight points, five assists and two steals. Trey Clark had eight points and four rebounds as well. 

Leake girls 51, 

Winston 32

The Rebelettes dominated the first and third period and took a 19-point win over the Lady Patriots on Friday.

Leake jumped out to an 18-5 lead in the first period and each team scored 13 points in the second period as the Rebelettes led 31-18 at the half. Leake shut out Winston 11-0 in the third and led 42-18 going to the fourth. Winston took the fourth period 14-9 for the final margin.

Katye Jones led Leake with 14 points and four rebounds while Morgan Freeny had nine points. Marleigh Myers had eight points and three rebounds while Emeri Warren and Olivia Rudolph each had seven points apiece. 

Leake boys 57, 

Winston 40

The Rebels outscored the Patriots in each of the first three periods and cruised to a 17-point win on Friday in district play.

Leake jumped out to a 19-8 lead in the first period and led 28-13 at the half. Leake then outscored Winston 17-14 in the third and led 45-27 going to the fourth. Winston took the fourth period 13-12 for the final margin.

Samuel Prince led Leake with 25 points, four rebounds and two steals while Whitt Welch had 13 points, four assists and two steals. Aiden Watkins had six points and five rebounds.
