Neshoba’s unemployment remains idle for May

The May unemployment rate in Neshoba County was 3.0 percent, a slight increase of one-tenths of a percentage point when compared to the previous month, according to figures from the Mississippi Department of Employment Security.

The rate was one  percentage point lower than the 4.0 rate in May 2022.

The unemployment rate represents the number of unemployed people as a percentage of the civilian labor force for the county.

The Neshoba County labor force was 9,670 people in May, the same as last month. There were 280 unemployed people in May.

Here is a look at unemployment rates in Neshoba and surrounding counties.

Kemper posted a 4.2% unemployment rate, up from 3.6% in April. 

Lauderdale posted a 3.1% unemployment rate, up from 2.7% in April.

Noxubee posted a 4.4% unemployment rate, up from 4.0% in April.

Winston posted a 3.1% unemployment rate, up from 2.7% in April.

Newton posted a 3.2% unemployment rate, up from 3.0% in April. 

Scott posted a 2.2% unemployment rate, up from 2.2% in April.

Leake posted a 3.0% unemployment rate, up from 2.6% in April. 

Attala posted a 3.4% unemployment rate, up from 3.0% in Apri.

Mississippi’s not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for May 2023 was 3.0 percent, increasing three-tenths of a percentage point from the previous month’s rate of 2.7 percent. When compared to May 2022, the rate decreased seven-tenths of a percentage point over the year. The Nation’s  unemployment rate for May 2023 at 3.4 percent increased three-tenths of a percentage point over the month but was unchanged over the year.

Mississippi’s nonfarm employment had an increase of 1,900 jobs over the month and had 17,200 more jobs than one year ago. Industry sectors registering the largest monthly employment gains were Professional & Business Services; Education & Health Services; and Trade, Transportation & Utilities.

For the month of May 2023, 29 counties in Mississippi posted unemployment rates less than or equal to the state’s rate of 3.0 percent. Rankin and Union Counties posted the lowest unemployment rate for the month of May at 2.1 percent followed by Lafayette County at 2.2 percent. Jefferson County had the highest unemployment rate for May at 10.2 percent followed by Issaquena County at 7.9 percent.
