A Neshoba County man was arrested with guns and drugs in his car in front of Popeyes earlier this month.

The man, Jason D. Shoemake, 38, 11960 Road 149, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of paraphernalia. He was also served a warrant for failure to appear in court.

Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark said deputies encountered Shoemake at about 3 a.m. in front of Popeyes, 1019 W Beacon St., at a safety checkpoint conducted with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Shoemake was driving a gray Chevy with one headlight.

Upon making contact with Shoemake, deputies reported the smell of alcohol coming from the car and saw a sawed-off shotgun behind the passenger seat. While securing the weapon, deputies found a felony amount of crystal methamphetamine in the vehicle, Clark said.
