A Philadelphia man faces drunk driving and drug charges after his arrest on Highway 492 about halfway between Union and the Hope community earlier this month.

The man, Jeffrey Lester Long, 44, of 10261 Road 109, was arrested and charged with DUI, careless driving, possession of paraphernalia, no proof of insurance and possession of a controlled substance, according to Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark.

A deputy first encountered Long on Highway 492 headed to Union around 5 p.m. on Oct. 2. Clark said. The deputy saw a Nissan Frontier driven by Long was swerving in the roadway.

The deputy reportedly made a traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 492 and County Road 286. The deputy noticed the strong smell of alcohol and numerous empty beer cans in in the vehicle and in the bed of the truck.

A search of Long’s person found a glass pipe and a search of the truck bed found a small plastic container containing a crystal like substance believed to be methamphetamine.
