Leake girls enter tournament as No. 3 seed

After two of their worst offensive showings of the season, the Leake Academy girls finally found their range on Saturday.

The Rebelettes opened the North 5A Tournament with a 32-29 win over Bayou Academy before falling 55-43 to Pillow Academy on Friday. They rebounded on Saturday morning and hit 10 3-pointers to beat Heritage Academy 56-40.

The Leake boys struggled this past week. After beating Bayou 54-53 in the opening round, the Rebels fell 48-45 to Magnolia Heights and 50-38 to Heritage on Saturday to finish fourth in the tournament.

The Leake girls move to 32-5 on the season and will be the No. 3 seed in the Class 5A Tournament this week at Pillow Academy where they will take on Copiah Academy at 5:15 p.m. 

The Leake boys fall to 21-13 overall and will take on Oak Forest on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Leake girls 32, Bayou 29

The Rebelettes struggled from the field again but held on to take a three-point win over the Colts on Wednesday.

Emeri Warren led Leake with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Katye Jones had six points and four rebounds while Grace Maxey also had six points. 

Leake boys 54, Bayou 53

The Rebels used a big fourth period to take a one-point win over the Colts in the opening round on Wednesday. 

Samuel Prince lead Leake with 21 points and four steals while Whitt Welch had 11 points. Matthew Nowell had seven points, three steals and three assists. 

Pillow girls 55, Leake 43

The Lady Mustangs pulled away in the second period and extended its lead in the second half to take a 12-point win on Friday in the North 5A semifinals. 

Miriam Prince led Leake with 11 points and four rebounds while Moran Freeny, Emeri Warren and Grace Maxey each had eight points apiece. 

Magnolia Heights boys 48, Leake 45

The Rebels overcame a slow start but couldn’t hold onto a late lead as they dropped a three-point decision to the Chieftains on Friday.

Samuel Prince led Leake with 27 points, two assists and three rebounds while Matthew Nowell had six points, four steals and three assists. 

Leake girls 56, 

Heritage 40

The Rebelettes dominated the first and third periods and got their shooting tough back as they took a 16-point win over the Lady Patriots. 

Leake was 10-of-25 from the 3-point line, their best output in weeks. Emeri Warren led Leake with 14 points with three rebounds and three assists. Morgan Freeny also had 14 points and four rebounds. Allen Kaye Wilcox had nine points and four rebounds while Caroline Cheatham added five points. Olivia Rudolph had four points and five rebounds while Marleigh Myers had four points and four rebounds. 

Heritage boys 50, 

Leake 38

The Rebels started slow and weren’t able to catch up as they dropped a 12-point decision to the Patriots.

Samuel Prince led Leake with 12 points while Matthew Nowell had eight points.
