A Leadership Neshoba interest meeting is set for Aug. 17.

The program helps juniors learn vital leadership skills such as character development, community involvement, being ambassadors, and more.

Tim Moore, executive director of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Chamber of Commerce, said Leadership Neshoba was formed in 2001 and is aimed at any high school junior in Neshoba County interested in learning how to be a good leader.

“The purpose of Leadership Neshoba is to bring together a diverse group of high school juniors to participate in a program focused on developing and understanding personal leadership styles and reviewing character development,” Moore said. “We also want to provide students with resources and action plans on how to respond to a leadership role in the future.”

The program’s main objectives include acquainting students with community needs, resources, and other factors that influence the future development of Neshoba County, encouraging students to recognize their own potential and develop leadership skills, fostering the students’ interest in voluntary community involvement, inspiring students to encourage the leadership potential of their peers by becoming ambassadors of their schools and community and expanding students’ understanding of community service.

The interest meeting is set for 6 p.m. on Aug. 17 at the Depot and is designed to inform students and parents about Leadership Neshoba and will answer any questions they might have about what the program does, what it plans to do, and what will happen after an applicant is accepted.

Leadership Neshoba meets monthly starting in October and ending in March.

Moore said East Central Community College handles the classes, and they base their lectures off the book The Seven Habits of Highly Affected Teens.

The class can have up to 30 participants.

Applications, which can be found at schools around Neshoba County, must be very detailed and the applications themselves are graded. Applicants also need two letters of recommendation, a typed essay, and a copy of their disciplinary record.

The application deadline is on Friday, Sep. 1 at noon.
