Congratulations to Sonar Technician Third Class Emily Berry (STG3 Berry) who was awarded the prestigious honor of Jr. Sailor of the Year!

It was no easy task to win this award. First, Emily had to win Sailor of the Quarter to even be considered. She accomplished this first step and then, wearing her NSUs, she appeared before a board where she was interviewed and answered questions.  Finally, she changed into her dress blues and competed against the sailor of the quarters for the rest of the year before another board where she answered more questions.

Emily was presented the award at an “all hands call” in front of her ship, the USS Gridley, because it was Sailor of the Year for the ship. Her very proud parents are Brian and Emily Whitaker Berry. Emily is a graduate of Neshoba Central High School. It is comforting to know that our military is composed of exceptional members of all branches of the service of which Emily is a shining example. We are all thankful for their service!

Operation Christmas Child is happening now with members of Spring Creek Baptist Church and East Philadelphia Baptist Church busy filling the Christmas boxes with items for children in several different countries where poverty is rampant and Jesus is unknown. Churches all over the world participate in this program which sends thousands of boxes out each holiday season. The contents are small in size, but large in love and caring. The recipients treasure the items packed inside the boxes and are so excited to open them. For some children, this is the first gift they have ever received. This program is another way of spreading God’s love in a tangible way.

It is sponsored by Samaritan's Purse whose mission is to share the good news of Jesus Christ and make disciples of the nations. Since its beginning in 1993 when 28,000 boxes were distributed, more than 209 million children in more than 120 countries have received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox. Tens of thousands of volunteers around the world partner with Samaritan's Purse to present the Gospel of Jesus Christ at festive outreach events where children are surprised with these shoebox gifts. Packing will continue at various local churches during November before the deadline. What an amazing program!
