August 20, 1943

Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Fulton of the Bond community have received a card from their son, Green C. Fulton, who is a prisoner of the Japanese in the Philippine Islands, stating that he is well and all right.

In an attempt to prevent threatened serious conditions due to the scarcity of feed crops in this section and throughout the country, a joint meeting of agricultural agencies service Neshoba County was held Monday afternoon, and recommendations were drafted which if followed by Neshoba County farmers may serve to alleviate the situation to some extent.

August 20, 1953

The first bale of cotton to be ginned this year came in on August 12th and was brought in by C. O. Barrier who resides three miles north of Philadelphia. The bale weighed 428 pounds.

In what has probably been the hottest contested election ever held in Mississippi, will come to a climax Tuesday of next week when over 400,000 voters will go to the polls to choose between former Gov. J. P. Coleman, and Lt. Gov. Paul B. Johnson for governor for the next four years.

Construction work by TVA which will provide a large increase in the supply of electricity to the southern portion of its service area in Miss., is nearing completion. The work which will cost about $2,000,000, consists essentially of raising the operating voltage of the transmission line from TVA's Midway substation.

August 23, 1973

Fire Chief W. G. Bronson announces that the Philadelphia Fire Department will host a District Fire-Fighters School Aug 2-31, the first of its kind ever held in the Neshoba County capital. The event is sponsored by the Mississippi State Fire Fighters School.

August 24, 1983

Philadelphia's Dick Molpus won the Democratic nomination for Mississippi secretary of state in Tuesday's second primary election. Unofficial statewide returns gave about 17,000 votes over John Ed Ainsworth.

The Neshoba County Board of Supervisors has received approval of a block grant for construction of a multi-purpose neighborhood facility building. The Governor's Office of Federal State Programs notified Board of Supervisors President Arlo Winstead of the approval.     

August 25, 1993 

Only 6,028 citizens have signed up as voters in Neshoba County since the re-registration drive began several months ago. That number is out of an estimated 12,000 to 13,000 persons eligible to register. An urgent plea for people to re-register was issued this week by county officials.

Dr. J. Romily Enochs was recently elected to serve as regional director for the Central Mississippi District of the Mississippi Odyssey of the Mind (OM) Program. This is an educational program that challenges children of all ages to put to work knowledge they have acquired in school and to use creative thinking to solve educational problems.

The Neshoba County School District saw improvements in each of its Subject Area Tests taken during the 2002-2003 school year, while topping the state average in both U.S. History and English.

A substantial tax increase that will generate about $565,000 to make up a recurring shortfall is part of an overall $7.4 million budget proposed by the Philadelphia Mayor and Board of Alderman Tuesday night that includes a modest pay raise for city employees.
