August 6, 1943

The first summer graduation exercises to occur in the history of East Central Junior College will be held in the college park, Friday evening, August 6, 8:30 P.M. All of the graduates are women, seven of them who will graduate from the high school division and three from the college.

The Knitting Department has recently been reorganized on a very gratifying basis. A number of group chairmen were appointed throughout the city, each chairman to have charge of the knitting in her immediate neighborhood.   

                

July 30, 1953

Officials of the Neshoba County Health Department stated this week that the X-Ray Mobile Unit will be in Philadelphia, Monday, August 3rd. It will be located on the court house square.

Eleven high schools of Neshoba County will have entrants in the annual Beauty Contest at the Neshoba County Fair Monday evening August 10. Two young ladies from each of the high schools will vie for the title "Miss Neshoba County." 

       

     August 1, 1963    

A petition signed by 20 person who were purged from the voting rolls in Beat Two of Neshoba County was presented to and heard by the Neshoba County Election Commissioners Thursday and Friday of last week. The petition alleges that the names were illegally taken off the voting rolls of three boxes in Beat Two.

L. E. Cliburn, member of the Bobashela District Executive Council, is announcing the formation of a new cub Scout pack at Linwood, Mississippi. The pack is being sponsored by the Linwood Baptist Church and Aubrey Nicholson is Cub Master.

August 2, 1973

Steve Nelson, who graduated from Neshoba Central High School in 1966, is returning to his alma mater this fall to join the coaching staff. Nelson, who was president of the student body at NHS and graduated with honors, played baseball and football, lettered two years, and made the Sam Dale Conference two years. 

August 3, 1983

A Philadelphia home was heavily damaged by fire late Saturday. The home of Marie Turner, 298 Byrd Ave., was heavily damaged by fire at about 11:24 p.m. Saturday, a spokesman for the Philadelphia Fire Department said.     

August 4, 1993 

A group of Choctaw Indian citizens have organized a petition drive calling for a referendum on the legalization of alcohol and gaming on the reservation. The action was prompted by the plans of the Boyd Group of Las Vegas to construct a casino on federal land in the Pearl River community. 

      

July 30, 2003

During a visit to the old railroad depot on Friday with a state preservationist, the mayor thumbed through old record books found on a counter showing train schedules to places all over the country. In the warehouse area, a scale used to weigh produce, cotton, and other items shipped through the depot was still intact.

Plans are under way to relocate the veterans monument on the south side of the courthouse to DeWeese Park to help provide better accommodations for memorial activities, veterans say.
