July 20, 1943

In an attempt to prevent threatened serious conditions due to the scarcity of feed crops in this section and throughout the country, a joint meeting of agricultural agencies serving Neshoba County was held on Monday afternoon, and recommendations were drafted which if followed by Neshoba County farmers may serve to alleviate the situation to some extent.   

                

July 16, 1953

Mayor Normal Johnson, Jr., announced this week that Highway Commissioner Felder Dearman informed him that the city streets which are maintained by the highway department will be marked with center strips in the near future.

Mrs. J. T. McArthur, secretary and treasurer for the Neshoba County Chapter of the Mississippi Society for Crippled Children and Adults, recently presented Mrs. Eva Brunson a collapsible wheel chair on behalf of the County Chapter. 

       

     July 18, 1963    

Bill Collier has been elected president of the Philadelphia Lions Club. Those selected to serve with him for the coming year are 1st vice president, Morris Therrell; 2nd vice president, John Risher; 3rd vice president, Johnnie PIggs; secretary and treasurer, J. C. Williamson; Tial Twister, John Hartshorn; and Lion Tamer, George Saxon. 

 

July 19, 1973

Representatives of the Choctaw Indian Tribe were presented a Red Cross certificate of appreciation recently in Birmingham. They are the first Indian group to give blood through the Birmingham Red Cross Regional Blood Program.

Neshoba County has received $120,130 as its share of petroleum tax surplus fund amounting to almost $11 million and distributed this month by the state motor vehicle controller's department. 

 

July 20, 1983

Open house in the new Neshoba County Health Center will be Thursday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. The 6,000 square-foot, $282,000 facility is located on Highway 19 south, across from the Neshoba County General Hospital.

The 1983 edition of the Neshoba County Fair begins Friday, July 22. The fair, which will continue through Friday, July 29 will feature the Magnolia State Shows daily, harness and running horse races, and political speaking.     

 

 

July 21, 1993 

Julia Barrett of Philadelphia showed Tontolina Go Bars to the title of World Champion in barrel racing in the 14-18 age division at the American Paint Horse Association's World Championship Show at the Will Rogers Equestrian Center in Fort Worth, Texas.

      

July 16, 2003

An abbreviated summer reading program has been organized after all and registration is Monday morning at Westside Park. The program, "Becoming a Better Reader," was organized by concerned educators and business leaders after the public library canceled its programs because of renovations.

             

July 17, 2013

A high-speed chase which began in Union as an unsuccessful speeding stop ended at the intersection of Mississippi 15 and 16 in Williamsville last week with the arrest of a Forest man. At least three patrol cars were damaged slightly. No injuries were reported.

The assessed value of Neshoba County rose $3.3 million, or about 2 percent, during 2012 which was welcome news to the Board of Supervisors. The previous year the county saw a $700,000 drop in value despite reappraisal.
