June 25, 1943

At a regular meeting of the Philadelphia Exchange Club held Wednesday noon, officers for the next six months were elected. Howard Stubbs was elected president; Lamar Oliphant, vice-president; Josh McCauley, secretary; and Jesse Houston, treasurer. Grady Hays, F. L. Grubbs, Edd DeWeese, John McCauley, Jesse Houston, and Lester Griffin were chosen as members of the Board of Control.     

                

June 25, 1953

Sixty-three majorettes will compete for the title of Miss Southern Majorette of 1953. The winner will be awarded a one-year $300 scholarship to Southern along with a trophy and a spot in Southern's majorette corps when she enrolls in college. 

       

     June 27, 1963    

The Dairy Week observance in Neshoba County will come to a climax Saturday afternoon when the Dairy Princess is crowned by Miss Charlene Fulton. The crowning of the new princess will take place at 2:00 p.m. in the home demonstration kitchen at the court house, immediately preceding the contest of milk or milk products recipes.

June 28, 1973

The House of Representatives has approved $4,310,000 in federal funds for replacement of the Public Health Service hospital in Philadelphia, Congressman G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery announced. The new 40-bed hospital will be built on the Pearl River Reservation west of Choctaw Central School. It will replace the present facility, built in 1926 with 23 beds.                            

June 29, 1983

The new Neshoba County Health Center will open in mid-July, center officials said Tuesday. The cost of the facility is $221,265, half being paid by the county and half by a federal grant. The new 57,000 square foot health center on Highway 19 south will replace the present facility on East Myrtle Street.     

June 30, 1993 

The Mississippi Arts Commission has awarded $581,747 in grants to Mississippi artists and arts organizations including the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Arts Council. Chair of the Commission, Edwin Downer, announced the awards which will provide funds for arts projects across the state.

Transportation Commissioner Wayne Burkes announced today that a contract has been awarded for improvements to Highway 19 in Neshoba County. Dickerson and Bown Inc. of Brookhaven was awarded the contract with a low bid of $450,982. 

      

June 26, 2003

City officials closed Mobile Street to through traffic last week after receiving a request from a business which plans to expand. Mayor Rayburn Waddell said the request came from Yates Building Supply which asked that the street be closed because of a planned expansion.

An outpatient physical therapy clinic in Philadelphia now has new owners and a new name. Operating as Rush Rehab Outpatient Physical Therapy since February 1999, Margaret Muse of Decatur and Wade Walters assumed ownership of the clinic May 1 changing the name to Performance Therapy.

A new law which clarifies carrying a weapon beginning July 1 has raised concerns with law enforcement. The law clarifies that Mississippi is an open carry state, giving citizens the right to openly carry a weapon without a permit because the state Constitution already says so. 

The Dizzy Dean 8 year old and 12 year old girls softball all-stars will begin tournament play this week at Northside Park. The 12 and under all-stars will be playing for the Dizzy Dean State Tournament while the 8 and under girls will be seeking the South State title.
