AUGUST 2, 1940

The Jones boys got out ahead of the rest of the Philadelphia Softball League this week by virtue of two victories, which gives them a still unmarred record of three wins and no defeats. Estes was on the long, long end of the score in its second game, defeating Lott 14-3.

AUGUST 4, 1950

Mrs. Herman Ford of the Forestdale Home Demonstration Club was declared third place winner in the afternoon dress class of the State Cotton style show. 160 club women participated in this event.

AUGUST 4, 1960

These three Rotarians have a total of 45 years perfect attendance at Rotary Club meetings, each with 15 to his credit. The men are; Norman Mars, Carley Peebles, and Tom Kin. Mr. Mars and Mr. Peebles are charter members of the club, having helped organize it in 1928..

AUGUST 6, 1970

Philadelphia and Neshoba County band students received several awards at the Mississippi State University Band Camp. Robert Burkes of Neshoba Central received the trophy for outstanding bandsman in the fifth band. Sellers Cole received a trophy for outstanding boy chorus member. 

Airman Judy D. Boswell, daughter of Mrs. Mary G. Boswell of Union, has completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. She has been assigned to Keesler AFB, Mississippi, for training in the administrative field. Airman Boswell is a 1968 graduate of Union High School and attended East Central Junior College, Decatur, Mississippi.

AUGUST 7, 1980

Ronald Reagan and Nancy Reagan attended the Neshoba County Fair on Sunday. Ronald presented a speech and there was a crowd of more than 20,000 people. They arrived by motorcycle from Meridian, Mississippi, where their plane landed. Mrs. Reagan was presented a rocking chair and a basket made by the Choctaw Indians and filled with fruit.

 AUGUST 1, 1990

Jeff Mayo won first place in the state cooperative speaking contest. He is a member of Neshoba Central’s Future Farmers of America. His advisor is Rusty Suttle.

AUGUST 2, 2000

Sarah Benson has been selected for an internship at J. Walter Thompson advertising agency in New York this summer. She is the daughter of Bob and Lynn Benson. She is currently working in the digital department helping design web pages for various accounts such as Lipton Ice Tea, Listerine, and Ardine Elizabeth.

AUGUST 4, 2010

Hannah Ward and her registered quarter horse, Pass the Diamond on Elmer won the Youth 4D Championship at the 2010 NBHA Youth World. She competed against 730 other young barrel racers from all over the world. For her reward, she received a 4-Star horse trailer, trophy saddle, belt buckle, and many other equine products. Hannah is the daughter of Barry and Beth Ann Ward and Mack and Tonia Holley.
