July 9, 1944

The County Board of Supervisors began their July session Tuesday, first taking up and disposing with routine matters before the Board. In addition to the approval of the reports of the several county officers, Clayton Lewis and A. E. Dees were appointed to inspect certain lieu lands situated in Hancock County. 

Philadelphia and Neshoba citizens observed a very safe and sane Fourth of July, including both Sunday and Monday, so far as the facts are known to the Democrat. Not a single accident nor untoward incident of any nature occured, so far as could be learned. 

   

July 9, 1954

The Board of Trustees of the Neshoba County Hospital instructed Supt. Lamar Salter, this week, to sign a contract with Blue Cross Hospital Insurance company. Mr. Salter stated that he had signed the contract and that officials of the company would come into the county during September to make a thorough canvass of this Hospital plan.  

Philadelphia's crack National Guard unit, Hy. and Hy. Service company, 750th Tank Btn., under the command of Capt. Brown Williams will depart Sunday morning for a two weeks encampment at Mt. McClelland, Ala. The troops will make their annual training trek in a 12-truck convoy. 

July 11, 1964

Philadelphia's new band director is Wilbur Smith of Newton. Smith, a graduate of the University of Mississippi, has directed the band at Marks for the past two years. Smith plans to move to Philadelphia next week in order to prepare the band for the Neshoba County Fair. 

July 12, 1974

Weyerhaeuser Company has announced the recent promotion of Dwight Barrett to Contract Logging and Tree Farm Family Manager for the Company's Mississippi-Alabama Region.

The Mississippi Air and Water Pollution Control Commission was investigating a "fish kill" in which hundreds of dead fish were found floating in Kentawka Canal and Pearl River on July 4. 

July 12, 1984

The Mississippi Department of Rehabilitation Services has awarded a grant to Neshoba County for improvements to the building which houses Allied Enterprises. The Board of Supervisors voted to accept the $75,000 grant during its last meeting.

      

July 9, 2004

Corridor review and development and the first public meeting to discuss an updated environmental assessment for a highway bypass south of town could come as early as this fall, state Department of Transportation officials said. The assessment is all part of what Central District Transportation Commission Dick Hall says is an effort to get truck traffic out of downtown Philadelphia and end 10 years of stalemate.

             

July 10, 2014

The emergency room in the new $19 million Neshoba County General Hospital will be open for services next week, when the transfer of patients from the old facility gets underway. 

The pastor and several members of Goodway Baptist Church pleaded with the Philadelphia Mayor and Board of Alderman to increase police protection in their neighborhood.
