December 24, 1943

Two sons of Mr. and Mrs. A.K. Dixon, of Philadelphia Rt. 3, are serving their country in the armed forces. Pvt. Sam B. Dixon has been in the service almost three years, and is now somewhere overseas. Paul G. Dixon is somewhere in England and has been in the service since March of this year.

Tommy Morrow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawler Morrow of this city recently enjoyed a 7-day leave with his parents. He has been in the service about one year, has spent eight months at sea and is now at Treasure Island, San Francisco, Calif.

              

December 24, 1953

Late Wednesday afternoon Gov Hugh White had signed four of the thirty-three equalized school program bills, and stated that he had three others on his desk to sign. 

Several checks have gone from this city to be used for the Vicksburg tornado victims. The Philadelphia Drive-Inn Theatre sent a check for $51.45 to the State Treasurer of the Mississippi Theatre owners, Mr. T. G. Solomon of McComb to be used for the storm sufferers there according to the manager James Sistrunk.

     December 26, 1963    

Emerson Electric Manufacturing Company's Electronics and Space Division has received a contract for repair and modification of 39 different types of airborne radio navigation instruments for the armed services.

Southern Bell Telephone Company announced today that it plans to spend approximately $31.7 million for new facilities in Mississippi in 1964 - more than in any previous year of its history. 

December 27, 1973

Cecil A. Barnett, Neshoba County supervisor for Farmers Home Administration since Sept. 1, today announced his retirement at the end of December. Barnett has elected to retire Dec. 31 after 33 1/2 years of service.

Mississippi's Indians, plagued for years with a high unemployment rate, are putting stronger-than-ever emphasis, nowadays, on increasing their employability. They are doing this through U.S. Department of Labor manpower-training programs.

December 28, 1983

Six homes in Neshoba County were destroyed by fire during the Christmas holidays, a busy time for both county and city fire departments. County Fire Chief Jimmy McDaniel cautioned residents about leaving home with large wood fires in heaters.

Otis M. Callahan is retiring from the Philadelphia project office of the Mississippi State Highway Department effective Jan. 1, 1984. A native of Madden, Callahan served with the United States Army from 1944 to 1946.

December 28, 1993 

With a ceremonial turn of shovels Tuesday morning, ground was broken on the Choctaw Indian Reservation for the Silver Star Resort and Casino, the only land-based gaming facility in Mississippi. 

      

December 24, 2003

A public hearing on two federal grant applications totaling $1.3 million was held by the Board of Supervisors on Dec. 15. The federal monies, if approved, would be for economic development purposes, although officials declined to say what projects specifically because of the sensitivity.

A little boy dropped off a dollar bill at City Hall and more than 47,000 pennies collected by school children arrived by wagon last week as part of the community wide effort to raise more than $4,000 to bring a National Guard unit training for war in Iraq home for Christmas.

A resolution to borrow up to $145 million to renovate the Silver Star Hotel and Casino, reactivate the Golden Moon Casino and possibly build a new casino in Leake County was approved by the Choctaw Tribal Council Thursday morning.
