October 29, 1943
With J.B. Hillman, president, presiding, the Neshoba County Bar Association honored the memory of one of its recently departed members, Judge Earl S. Richardson, with a simple but beautiful and impressive Memorial Service held in the court room at the county court house Monday afternoon, Judge Percy M. Lee suspending circuit court for this service.
At the Wednesday meeting of the Exchange Club, Exchangies heard C. E. patch, of Baldwin, Miss., who is General Field Representative of the American National Red Cross, discuss the workings of the Red Cross. Mr. Patch commended the Neshoba County Chapter of the Red Cross and said that the Chapter was in good shape.

The most unusual episode in the annals of Neshoba County medical history was enacted here this morning when large tumors weighing nearly 18 pounds were removed from the abdomen of a woman patient at the local hospital.
Philadelphia is going to have a Junior College football game Saturday night, October 31, for the first time. It has been the thinking of a number of people that since we have a stadium large enough to take care of a crowd, we should try to have at least one Junior College game per year.

A demonstration lecture program, titled "This Atomic World," will be presented in an assembly program at Neshoba County High School on Nov. 6 and Philadelphia High School on Nov. 7. The program, sponsored by the United States Atomic Energy Commission, is presented by the Oak Ridge Institute of Nuclear Studies, Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Philadelphia High was among school systems recognized for long standing accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in ceremonies recently in Jackson. With a record of 44 years of such standing, Philadelphia was included in a group of schools having over 25 years of accreditation.

Six substandard bridges on Highway 21 between Sebastopol and Philadelphia are to be replaced, Central District Highway Commissioner Sam W. Waggoner, announced today. Waggoner said a contract was awarded to Dotie Jackson Contractor, Inc. of Carthage for $1,196,488.

Health and Human Services Secretary Donna E. Shalala announced today that Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits will increase 2.6 percent, beginning with the payments that Social Security beneficiaries receive Jan 3 and SSI recipients receive on Dec 30.

Four options for building a beltway around Philadelphia will be presented by the state Department of Transportation at a Nov. 18 public hearing here, Central District Highway Commissioner Dick Hall said Monday as he revealed conceptual drawings during a speech to the Philadelphia Rotary Club.

Philadelphia saw a 8 percent or $23,784 increase in sales tax collections during August, a trend the mayor hopes will continue through the holidays. "I want to commend our business owners and citizens for shopping and doing business in town," Mayor James A. Young said.
