Baseball, softball teams start heating up

The Neshoba Central Lady Rockets are off to a 6-0 start as they go for their 10th fast-pitch state championship in a row and the 12th in program history.

“We are trying to win them one at a time,” said Coach Zach Sanders. “We are getting everybody healthy and we have our basketball girls back.

“We  just need to play. Starting this week, we are facing some good competition. We are starting to hit the ball.”

Pitcher Lanayah Henry is off to a good start. In six games, she hasn’t given up a run.

The Lady Rockets will be busy the next couple of weeks. They were to play at East Webster on Tuesday, then host South Jones on Thursday. The Lady Rockets travel to the Coast Friday to play in the West Harrison tournament. They take on Sumrall on Friday, and play Hancock and South Panola on Saturday. The following Thursday will see the Lady Rockets play Ethel. They enter the Clarkdale Spring Fling with two games on Friday.

The Neshoba Central baseball team is going through some rebuilding times after losing 10 players from last year’s that made it to the finals of the state Class 5A state tournament. The Rockets split a pair of games over the weekend, losing to Choctaw County 5-4 in extra innings on Friday and beating Kosciusko 7-2 on Saturday.

The Philadelphia Tornado baseball team is off to a 1-4 start but Coach Jordan Flake is looking for better things to come.

“We are young,” Flake said. “We have  two seniors and two juniors and the rest are 10th graders.

The Tornadoes were to play Choctaw County on Monday, travel to Columbus on Tuesday and then host Union on Saturday.

The Philadelphia Lady Tornadoes softball program is rebuilding from the ground up under new head coach Sydney Martin.

The Lady Tornadoes stand at 1-5 going into this week with their win coming over region rival Newton. The Lady Tornadoes were to host McAdams on Monday, Leake County and Nanih Waiya on Tuesday and then host Scott Central on Thursday.

The Choctaw Central Lady Warriors softball team is off to a 4-0 start under new head coach Mahalia Gibson.

The Union Lady Yellowjackets won three straight games in a busy week of softball. Union picked up its first two wins of the season on the baseball diamond.

Leake baseball, now 6-2 on the season, will return to action this week as they play at Canton on Thursday and then at Newton County Academy on Friday.
