Tornadoes celebrate homecoming with region win
The Philadelphia Tornadoes are 1-0 in the Region 4-2A following their 54-12 victory over J.Z. George Friday night in prep football action.
The Tornadoes celebrated homecoming on a high note as they improved to 2-4 overall. Philadelphia will travel to Sebastopol Friday night to take on the 6-0 Bobcats.
“We played pretty good this week.” Said Tornadoes coach David Frey. “We will have a tough game this week against Sebastopol. They are undefeated. They have a really good running quarterback. They are always real gritty. It will be a tough game.”
The Tornadoes took the opening kickoff and drove 56 yards in seven plays for a touchdown. Imarion Black scored on a two-yard run. The extra point try was no good and Philadelphia led 6-0.
The Tornadoes scored again on the first play of the second quarter on an 18-yard run by quarterback Bernard Parker. The extra point failed and the Tornadoes led 12-0.
The Tornadoes would add 36 points to their score before the half.
On their next possession, running back C.J. Rush ran 46 yards to put the Tornadoes on the Jaguar’s 16-yard line. On the next play, Black carried it the rest of the way into the end zone. Black scored the two point conversion and Philadelphia led 20-0.
he Tornadoes defense recovered a fumble on the second play following the kickoff at the Jaguars’ 46-yard line. Two plays later, Dee Burnside bolted 40 yards for a touchdown. Keatham Graham scored the two point conversion and Philadelphia led 28-0.
J.Z. George mishandled the kickoff and Deonta Nix recovered for Philadelphia. Two plays later, Graham scored on a 23-yard run. Bryson Boler kicked the extra point and the Tornadoes led 35-0.
The Tornadoes scored again with 39 seconds left in the half on a 9-yard run by Parker. The extra point try failed and Philadelphia led 41-0.
J.Z. George fumbled the ball away and Carmarion Grady recovered the ball for a touchdown. Boler kicked the extra point and Philadelphia led 48-0 with 19 seconds left. On the ensuing kickoff, the Jaguars returned the ball 70 yards for a touchdown. The extra point try failed and the Tornadoes led 48-6 at the half.
The second half was played with a running clock and Coach Frey used the time to play his younger players. Kenyon Hunter scored Philadelphia’s final touchdown on a 13-yard run. J.Z. George scored its final points on a 63-yard run to end the scoring.
The Tornadoes had 387 rushing yards and 72 passing yards for 459 total yards.
Rush was the leading rusher with 179 yards on 19 carries. Black had 50 yards on eight carries while Burnside had 40 yards rushing and two catches for 37 yards. Hunter finished with 40 rushing yards. Parker completed 4-of-6 passes for 72 yards.
