Retired banker Stanley Salter took the stage in a heartwarming manner as he accepted the Citizen of the Year award Monday night at the Community Development Partnership’s annual banquet.

Retired businessman Steve Wilkerson presented the award, leading to a standing ovation for Salter.

During his introduction, Wilkerson humorously teased Salter but emphasized his profound impact on the community, his church, local schools, and beyond.

Salter’s contributions are evident through his 40-year banking career, culminating in his retirement from The Citizens Bank in 2010, his 26 years of service in the Mississippi National Guard, and his ongoing work as chairman of the Industrial Development Authority.

“This is an emotional and heart-touching moment for me,” Salter said as he reflected, often emotionally, on receiving the award. “As I look around this room, I see so many people who have touched my life in one way or another. Many of you have supported me throughout my life.”

He continued to thank the many co-workers and community members who are and were part of his journey, crediting them for their efforts to make Philadelphia a better place.

“I ask you to continue to pray for me and my ailment,” Salter added, referring to a recent cancer diagnosis.

“I’m going to fight, and I’ll continue to next year, the next year, and the next. We are going to win this fight!”

Beyond his banking career and military service, Salter has been active in various community roles.

He served as president of the Sertoma Club twice, directed the Heart O’ Dixie Triathlon for two years, held every position in the Philadelphia Rotary Club, served as president of the Neshoba County Schools and East Central Community College boards, and more.

He is also well-known for his passionate support of Mississippi State University athletics, particularly the baseball team.

Salter keeps detailed scorebooks for every Mississippi State game he attends. He has followed the Mississippi State Bulldogs baseball team to the College World Series in Omaha since 2007, attending every appearance (2007, 2013, 2018, 2019, and 2021).

In addition to Salter’s recognition, the following awards were presented:

Small Business of the Year: Tots, Teens & In-Betweens

 • Large Business of the Year: Windham Tractor & Implement Company

Pam Lovern was honored for her three years of service as chairman of the CDP board.
