Leake Academy tops Wayne Academy to remain undefeated
The Leake Academy Rebels swing back into action Friday night when they visit East Rankin Academy in prep football action.
The Rebels enter the game with a 7-0 record following last week’s 34-14 victory over Wayne Academy.
Leake Academy struck first as Whitt Welch ran 16 yards for a touchdown. Cole Arthur kicked the extra point and the Rebels led 7-0 with 11:10 left in the first quarter.
Wayne Academy came back with a touchdown of is own with a 37-yard run. The kick was good and the score was tied at 7-7 with 9:09 left in the first quarter.
Leake Academy came back with two touchdowns. Quarterback Rhett Atkinson connected with Levi Brown on a 43-yard TD pass. Arthur kicked the extra point and the Rebels led 14-7 with 8:26 remaining in the first quarter.
Then Welch scored his second touchdown of the game on a five-yard run. The extra point try failed and the Rebels led 20-7 with 7:46 remaining in the quarter.
Late in the quarter, Wayne Academy scored in a five-yard run. The kick was good and the Rebels led 20-14 at the end of the quarter.
Neither team scored in the second and third quarters. In the fourth quarter, Welch scored his third touchdown of the game on a 12-yard run. Arthur kicked the extra point and the Rebels led 27-14.
The final score of the game came when Canon Parks ran two yards for a touchdown. Arthur’s kick was good and the Rebels led 34-14.
Leake Academy finished with 320 total yards and 18 first downs. The Rebels had 238 rushing yards on 43 carries, and completed 3-of-9 passes for 82 yards, Leake Academy had five penalties for 50 yards, and lost 3-of-5 fumbles.
Wayne Academy had 191 total yards and 12 first downs. The Jaguars had 136 rushing yards on 44 carries, while completing 6-of-10 passes for 55 yards, Wayne Academy was penalized five times for 35 yards and five fumbles.
Welch finished the night with 104 rushing yards on 15 runs. Atkinson had 20 rushing yards. He had all of the Rebels passing, giving him 102 total yards.
