Leake Academy looking for first win against Bayou

The Leake Academy football team lost its second game in as many tries.

The Rebels fell behind early and couldn’t come back as Starkville took a 30-3 win on Friday night.

Leake falls to 0-2 on the season and will host Bayou Academy this week in another non-division contest.

Veteran coach Brian Pickens said he thought his young team played better but still had too many mistakes.

“I actually thought we played a lot better than the week before,” Pickens said. “We moved the ball on offense and have to finish off some drives. It seemed like everything we got something going on offense, we would make a mistake and we’ve got to clean those things up. On defense, we played better but have to make the plays in front of us. They caught a couple of jump balls that was really the difference in the game. But the kids played hard and got better from last week. We’ve just got to continue to improve on us.”

The Volunteers took the opening drive and scored on a 12-yard run with 10:4 left in the first quarter and led 7-0. The Volunteers added a 35-yard field goal with 5:00 left in the first for an early 10-0 lead.

The Rebels got their only points on the first play of the second quarter on a 32-yard field goal from Matthew Nowell with 14:55 left in the half.

Starkville then added two scores on touchdown passes of 21 and 36 yards and led 24-3 at the half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Starkville finished with a 6-yard touchdown pass with 7:57 left in the game for the final margin of 30-3.

The Rebels struggled in the running game, gaining only 48 yards on 23 carries. Charlie Brantley led the rushing attack with 31 yards on nine carries while Camden Marble had 19 yards on five carries.

George Wilcox was 13-of-24 passing for 133 yards for 181 yards of total offense. Matthan Weaver had seven catches for 84 yards. Nowell had 29 yards on two catches while Jack Harkins had three catches for 12 yards.

On defense, Marble had 10 tackles while Tyler Winstead had 6.5 tackles. Grayson McDonald had five tackles while Coby Kemp had four tackles. Kaden Chipley and Charlie Brantley each had three tackles apiece.

This week’s game

The Rebels will return home this week as they go after their first win against Bayou Academy.

The Colts are 1-2 on the season. They lost 27-8 to Jackson Academy in week one before beating Washington 36-13 in week two. Last week, the Colts lost 7-0 to Copiah.

“They have some really good looking football players,” Pickens said “They have lost to two really good football teams in Jackson Academy and Copiah. We’ve got to get better this week and continue to improve.”
