Leake Academy baseball falls to 2-3-1 on year

The Leake Academy baseball team had an up and down week on the diamond.

The Rebels opened the week at Jackson Academy and fell 12-9 to the 6A Raiders before hosting Winston on Thursday and losing 5-3 in the seventh inning. The Rebels then ended the week on Friday with a 6-5 walk-off win against Newton County Academy. 

Leake, now 2-3-1 on the season, will return to play this week as they travel to unbeaten Madison St. Joseph on Monday and then host Tri-County on Friday. 

Leake 6, NCA 5

The Rebels scored the last four runs of the game, including a walkoff single from Charlie Brantley in the seventh inning to take a one-run win on Friday night. 

Each team had six hits in the contest. Brantley was 2-for-3 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBIs while Rhett Stovall was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Rece Atkinson had a big two-run double in the sixth inning. Jack Harkins had Leake’s other hit with an RBI single in the sixth inning. 

Harkins started on the mound and pitched three innings, giving up just one hit and three walks. Caden Stovall pitched the next two innings, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks while striking out three. Mathew Nowell pitched the last two innings to pick up the win, giving up three unearned runs on two hits and a walk. 

Jackson Academy 12, Leake 9

The Raiders took advantage of seven walks, three hit batters and three walks to take a three-run win over the Rebels and sweep the season series on Thursday. 

Leake had just three hits but drew eight walks and had four hit batters. Jack Harkins and Grayson McDonald each singled and drove in two runs apiece while Matthan Weaver singled, walked twice and scored a run. Charlie Brantley scored two runs while Warner Young and Eli Thompson both walked twice.

Tanner Walsworth started on the mound but got just one out and gave up five runs on two hits and three walks. Young then pitched the next 2 2/3 innings and gave up four runs, with only one earned on two hits while striking out four. Tyler Winstead pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs. Majure Chandler pitched the last 1 2/3 innings and gave up one unearned run on two hits and three walks while striking out four. 

Winston 5, Leake 3

The Patriots scored four runs in the top of the seventh to rally and beat the Rebels on Tuesday. 

Leake outhit Winston 7-5 in the contest but also issued eight walks. Charlie Brantley was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Tyler Winstead and Caden Stovall also singled and drove in a run. Jon Donovan also tripled for the Rebels. 

Rece Atkinson started on the mound for Leake, pitching four shutout innings, scattering two hits and two walks while striking out five. Donovan pitched the next 2 1/3 innings and gave up three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out three. Coby Kemp then faced three batters and gave up two runs on a hit and two walks while Stovall came in and pitched 2/3 of an inning and struck out two.
