The Philadelphia Country Club was filled with sounds of laughter, happy chatter, music, and people enjoying themselves as the Philadelphia High School Class of 1973 celebrated its 50th Class Reunion on Saturday evening, Oct. 21.

The reunion was a great success with 41 classmates attending from all over the country along with their spouses and dates which created a huge crowd. The room was festively decorated in the school colors of red and black with white accents. The school mascot, an enormous red and black tornado, was the focal point for the podium in front of the stage where the DJs, Alan and Andy Hardy played music for the crowd.

The number 50 was such a creative interpretation with the giant numerals cut from black and white picture collages of the students 50 years ago. There was a memorial table with pictures of classmates who had passed away with an “In Loving Memory” framed caption on it with red roses. Round serving tables for beverages were covered in black floor-length tablecloths and white toppers. The buffet tables were covered with red toppers over white cloths to display a delectable selection of food catered by Tony Gray.

A photo center framed in red, black, and white balloons on either side of a backdrop offered an opportunity for pictures of the event. The entire area looked amazing. The committee did a fabulous job! According to Deena Dansby, “Their class was different because they always stayed in touch.”

A Viking river cruise through Europe was a fabulous vacation for Debbie and Christian Stokes recently. They sailed from Switzerland through France, Germany, and the Netherlands.

They saw beautiful scenery as they sailed along as well as fascinating historical landmarks. One interesting sight was a hotel in the Black Forest in Germany where a young Marie Antoinette stayed. There were castles on the heights above the river which were magnificent. In Cologne, Germany, they saw the famous statue of the "Spitting Boy,” as well as pieces of the Berlin Wall. In the Netherlands, there were the incredible windmills which were once used to pump water for the country. Wooden shoes were displayed for tourists to buy and were once actually worn by the people.

Happy Anniversary to Stanley and Kay Salter! They celebrated 40 years of marriage on Oct. 22. The couple has several family members in Philadelphia with whom they like to participate in various activities. I know from experience that Kay is also a fantastic cake baker! Congratulations and best wishes for many more years of happiness!

The Ladies of the Holy Cross Catholic Church met last Wednesday in the parish hall for their monthly meeting. The hostesses prepared and served a luscious dinner of two types of gumbo and rice with French bread and crackers. Desserts were a white fudge candy with chopped pecans and long giant pretzels dipped in white chocolate and embellished with strands of chocolate.

The guest speaker was Neshoba County Sheriff Eric Clark, who presented an informative program on how to protect ourselves and our families as well as educating us about the different types of illegal drugs currently used in different areas of our county.

Kaiser Rushing won 1st Place in the TAG Talent Show held recently at Neshoba Central Elementary School. She played Taylor Swift’s “Blaze” on the piano and won for the fourth grade.

Her cousin, Wyatt Little, and his friend, Corbin Dertinger, won 1st Place for the second grade with a skit from “Mario.” Congratulations! I understand that all of the students in the show did great!
