APRIL 10, 1942

Friends of the late Brown Williams from Neshoba County and over the State of Mississippi are expected to attend in large number the dedication program and unveiling of the Plaque at the Brown Williams Memorial Bridge on Highway 80, just outside Jackson, on next Tuesday, April 14, at 4:00 P. M.

A War Department bulletin Thursday morning stated that Gen. Wainwright’s forces on the Philippines had been over-come by overwhelming and repeated Japanese assaults lasting for some three months. Wainwright’s communique reporting the situation was received at Washington at 5:00 A. M. Thursday morning.    

APRIL 11, 1952

In a series of recent prohibition raids through last Tuesday, city officers made several arrests and confiscated a large assortment of moonshine liquor and home-brew.  

APRIL 10, 1962

All of Philadelphia’s and Neshoba County’s 3,119 telephones will be changed to dial this Sunday morning, April 15, at 1:01 AM. This is a change-over from the flash system which has been used here for several years. Of the 3,110 telephones in the country 2,100 are in the City of Philadelphia and 1,019 outside the city but in the county. 

  

APRIL 9, 1972

Starting today, April 13, weather permitting, there will be six to eight airplanes flying out of Meridian with electronic guidance equipment treating Lauderdale, Kemper, Neshoba and a small part of the Northeast section of Leake County for fire ants, C. S. Norton, County Agent said.

APRIL 10, 1982

President Reagan Monday declared a federal state of emergency for Neshoba, Leake and Kemper counties in the wake of the April 3 tornado that rocked the East Central area of the state. Gov. William Winter announced the declaration at a Monday press conference in Jackson. 

      

APRIL 10, 1992

The Mississippi Republican Party today announced plans for delegate selection for the 1992 Republican National Convention slated for Aug. 17 through Aug. 20 in Houston, Texas. This year 33 delegates will be chosen to attend the convention representing Mississippi.     

    

APRIL 11, 2002

A resolution that could help the city gain landmark status for the railroad depot was passed by the Mayor and Board of Alderman last week. Under guidelines of the Department of Archives and History, the alderman passed a resolution requesting consideration for landmark designation, in hopes the resolution will speed up the designation process and lead grants for restoration. 

 

APRIL 12, 2011

The community will officially welcome home the National Guard’s 298th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion and thank them for their service to the country during a program here on Saturday. The unit returned home in January after serving a year in Afghanistan.
