MARCH 6, 1942

As Corn Growing Champion of 21 Southeastern Mississippi Counties, 15-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. I. D. Sharp of Philadelphia Route 4, was awarded a $45.00 Elgin watch Tuesday by the Chilean Nitrate Education Bureau.

Plans for the rationing of sugar in Neshoba County has been ordered delayed for about ten days, according to a telegram received Tuesday by W. A. Winsted, superintendent W. A. Chi Chester, State Rationing Administrator. 

MARCH 7, 1952

A revival in the interest of the UEM will begin Sunday, March 9th and continue through Friday March 14th at Henry’s Chapel. Rev. Roy Wolfe will do the preaching. Services at 10:30 every morning except Sunday it will begin at 11 A. M. 

The most recent community to organize to enter the competition between communities of the county in the Community Improvement Project was Dowdville. That community met Tuesday night and organized and named James McMillan as chairman, Carl Watkins, Vice-chairman, and Mrs. Ross McMillian, secretary.   

MARCH 6, 1962

Bids on construction of the new U. S. Electrical Motors building in Philadelphia will be opened on Tuesday April 3, it is announced in the legal advertisement for the bids in this issue of the Democrat. 

Girl Scouting is being brought to the forefront in Philadelphia this week, not only by the celebration of its 50th birthday but with solicitations locally. Mrs. Richard Molpus is heading the drive for funds for the girls locally.  

  

MARCH 5, 1972

Fourteen adults, Choctaw Indians, have completed a manpower at East Central Junior College. Of the 21 Choctaws who enrolled in the course 14 received certificates when the program was recently completed.    

MARCH 6, 1982

An organization of persons in fighting the drug problem in Neshoba County will be held on March 23. The meeting will be held at 7 p. m. in the gymnasium at Neshoba Central High School. The organization will be a part of DREAM (Drug Research and Education Association in Mississippi).   

      

MARCH 6, 1992

Voters both Democratic and Republican will go to the polls March 10 along with voters in several other states in Super Tuesday balloting to express their preferences among presidential candidates. Also on the ballot are congressional and state supreme court races.

A new legislative redistricting plan on its way to the Justice Department for review would, if approved make a few changes in Neshoba County in House of Representatives districts. All of Neshoba County would continue to be in Senate District 18.   

    

MARCH 7, 2002

A downtown revitalization group has urged the Mayor and Board of Alderman to purchase the historic railroad depot for use as a welcome center. Representatives from the Philadelphia Main Street Association asked the city to purchase the near century-old building from a local developer. 

A two-day rodeo brought more than 3,000 visitors to the county’s coliseum, the facility’s director said. With the rodeo came more than 150 competitors from at least six states, bringing with them family and friends so see them perform, boosting the cities tourism tax.   

 

MARCH 7, 2011

Tribal Chief and Chairman of Choctaw Resort Development Enterprise Board Phyllis J. Anderson signed a loan package Tuesday morning that refinances the Mississippi Choctaw’s Pearl River Resort in Choctaw and the Bok Homa Casino in Jones County.
