DECEMBER 20, 1940

Clarence Johnson of Linwood and two other Mississippi 4-H boys provided the peanut exhibit which won the national sweepstakes for the best state peanut display at the 1940 National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago. Johnson and others also won individual blue awards, signifying the equivalent of first place, or highest possible rating.  

DECEMBER 15, 1950

Jerome Daly will receive his medical degree from North Western University, Chicago today and will leave shortly afterward for his home here to spend the holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.B. Daly. Jerome is a graduate of the local high school and the University of Mississippi. He will begin his internship at Hotel Dieu Hospital in New Orleans.

DECEMBER 15, 1960

Perry Myers of Wells Lamont Corporation, and Ed Alderman of A. DeWeese Lumber Company, have been named to committees of the Mississippi Manufacturers Association for the coming year. Myers will serve on the industrial relations committee and Alderman on the unemployment compensation committee.

DECEMBER 17, 1970

William H. Tucker, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.H. Tucker of Philadelphia will receive the master of divinity degree during commencement exercises to be held in Fort Worth, Texas at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. 

Airman Hal T. Grice, son of the Rev. and Mrs. J.W. Grice of Union, has completed basic training and security police training at Lackland AFB, Texas. He is a 1970 graduate of Neshoba Central High School.

DECEMBER 18, 1980

Lamar Cheatham and Johnny White of Neshoba Central High School recently received all-conference honors by the Mid-Mississippi coaches. Cheatham played at the defensive tackle position while White played defensive end.

Phyllis Carter scored 11 points against Louisville to gain Player of the Week honors. Neshoba Central was competing in the Philadelphia Invitational Tournament. 

DECEMBER 19, 1990

The Rotary Club honored two students of the month recently at its December luncheon meeting. Rotary Club vice president Bobby Luke, presented plaques to Shayne Martin, of Philadelphia High School and Jay Fortenberry, of Neshoba County High School.

Lisa Bishop, a senior at Noxapater High School, has been chosen to receive a Leadership Award from Livingston University according to Dr. Ervin L. Wood, Vice-President for student services. Bishop is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Clay Bishop of Noxapater. She plans to attend Livingston University in the fall.

DECEMBER 20, 2000

Managers for the East Central Community College football team received special recognition at the annual awards banquet held following the 2000 campaign. The men are; Damon Hudson of Philadelphia, Michael Thompson of Collins and Jareel Combest of Louisville. Hudson is also responsible for filming ECCC football games. 

Hilda Crawford  was surprised to win a door prize during a two-day workshop and open house in the Neshoba County Parent Resource Center. Over 125 people attended the Christmas event.

DECEMBER 15, 2010

Austin Day (30) carries the ball as he gets blocking help from Nicholas McClendon (53) in the Philadelphia Rookies’ win over Dixie for the state championship.

Mayor James Young signs a proclamation for Hospice Month along with members of Philadelphia hospice. The people are Kay Hillman, Gina Sisson, Amy Norris, Rita Gaines, and JoAnn Rounsaville.
