AUGUST 16, 1940

Farmers’ victorious in Neshoba County’s “Win a Trip to Better Dairying” Contest left Sunday for a tour to Wisconsin, as a reward to their own farms this summer. Winners in the contest were I. W. Barrett, J.L. Cox, Irby W. Majure, S.T. Griffin, W.W. Sherrod, and N.W. Dempsey.

AUGUST 18, 1950

Sgt. Zander Lundy sailed for overseas duty with the U.S. Army. Sgt. Sunday has seen several years of service having participated in World War II. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Lundy, of Philadelphia. His wife and three children also reside in Philadelphia.

AUGUST 18, 1960

Fred Gipson is the new Philadelphia Golf Club Champion, having downed Randolph Russell in the finals, 2 and 1. He succeeds C.D. McNeese as the title-holder. Russell is also a former club champion, winning the title in 1958.

AUGUST 20, 1970

Mrs. Sammie Ruth Couch Rea of Philadelphia has been selected as an Outstanding Young Woman of America for 1970 and she will appear in the annual biographical compilation, Outstanding Young Women of America. Mrs. Rea is married to Jimmy Rea and they have two sons, John and Sam.

AUGUST 21, 1980

A.W. (Rack) Burt, director of Parks and Recreation, presents Lee Dukes with a plaque on behalf of the Philadelphia-Neshoba County Park Commission in appreciation for outstanding service.

AUGUST 15, 1990

William Gully Yates III is the 1990 recipient of the Neshoba County Youth Achievement Award. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bill Yates.

AUGUST 16, 2000

Derek Cannon has accepted membership in The National Society of Collegiate Scholars and will be honored during a campus ceremony this fall at the University of Mississippi.

AUGUST 18, 2010aJohn Cress wins fifth annual Slow Poke Race. He ran the course in 17 minutes. Aaron Bradley came in second with a time of 17:55. The race started and finished at the Neshoba County Coliseum. The event is held in honor of the late Johnny Bradley.
