APRIL 5, 1940

Sonny Brantley won the district tennis singles championship. Philadelphia's tennis teams won three second places also, with J.D. Harpole and Jimmy Welsh taking second in boys' doubles. Lorainne Florence Mars and Joan DeWeese second in girls' doubles.

APRIL 7, 1950

Messers J.N. Jackson and C. L. Clark have established a rabbit farm. This is not just an ordinary rabbit farm. It is a farm that will furnish the fur for sweaters, hats, coat trimmings, for the ladies al over the United States. The idea of his rabbit farm was "hatched" in Japan, during the war. Mr. Jackson met Mr. Clark when they were in the land of Hirohito.

APRIL 7, 1960

Barbara Laney Gasper served as first attendant to the Queen of Mardi Gras at the Mardi Gras dance. She is the fourteen year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Gasper. She was selected to dance a ballot solo in the operetta Brigadoon.

The Philadelphia High School track team were overall winners in a triangular meet with Kosciusko and Canton. The Tornadoes won the boys division with first places in five events and the girls team placed second with first places in three events. In the 100 yard dash, Mundy Breazeale. In the field events, Dickie Day won the broad jump.

APRIL 2, 1970

The Neshoba Central High School track team won a victory in the five-team track meet at Forest. The Rockets had two double winners, Robert Smith in the 100 yard dash and 220 yard dash; and Annette Duncan in the 75 yard dash and high jump.

APRIL 10, 1980

The Neshoba County Senior 4-H Land Judging Team placed second at the state contest held at Carthage. There were 46 teams competing. Members of the team are Glen Pierce, Craig Harvey, and Greg Penley. Harvey was the third place high scorer of the contest and Pierce was the fourth high scorer in the contest.



APRIL 11, 1990

Alicia M. Thompson of Neshoba Central High School was announced as a 1990 finalist in two national scholarship competitions from the Mississippi School for Math and Science. These competitions are the National Merit Scholarship Competition and the National Achievement Scholarship.

APRIL 5, 2000

Katy McClenahan, daughter of George and Tammy Tawater of Philadelphia will compete in the state spelling bee in Jackson. Katy a sixth grader at Leake Academy, won second place in the district spelling bee.

John Christopher Ladd has received his ministry license. He is the son of J.C.and Willie Mae Ladd of Philadelphia. He attends Philadelphia Church of God.

APRIL 7, 2010

Cold temperatures and a biting wind couldn't dampen the spirits of Robert and Frankie Germany as they greeted their son, 1st Lt. Hatt Hodges, at Ft. Hood, Texas, earlier this year. The Germanys surprised Matt upon his return from his third, year-long tour of duty in Iraq.
